Thanks guys, sorry I didn’t mean to hijack the thread. CPW needs to clean up the process. There are at least two places on their website where it implies that for a plated vehicle one can purchase a permit at the CPW Shop and directs you there, but they have only park passes, no OHV permit. Then the registration PDF isn’t very clear and the process is off-line by mail.

Oh well, I also needed to buy a parks pass anyway.

I'll be heading out from Denver but I will be taking 285 to "Will-O-The-Wisp" I guess its called, and turning there onto Pine Valley Road. This route takes me through Deckers so if anyone wants to meet up there I can. However if you're meeting up earlier on you're route scheduling two is too much of a headache and I'm fine making it to the trailhead on my own.

I'll probably be taking the Platte River Rd way back since its such a nice drive, but in the interest of not addding much time to the route I'm going to go with the one Google maps says is fastest from my dog's daycare

shoot i thought it was the park pass i needed. Does a park pass supersede this OHV Permit or would I need that still?

They are twp totally different things. You need a parks pass to get into state parks and the OHV permit for certain trails/roads.

Maybe we should create a sticky thread for OHV permit questions. The CPW website can be confusing and we do this every spring. Might be nice to consolidate some of our prior discussions and wisdom on this topic into an easy-to-find place at the top of one of the boards. Jim, thoughts?

I just spoke to someone from the office they confirmed on the phone that a PLATED VEHICLE DOES NOT REQUIRE A REGISTRATION.. so you just buy your OHV Permit for $25.25 and you're good to go.

the registration is for non-plated vehicles, personally i found this particular sentence misleading when you click the Purchase button for the OHV permit

but I suppose once you understand they're only talking about motorcycles, dirt bikes, three wheelers, ATVs and dune buggies it makes more sense

    My belief
    1) If it's a Forest Service "road" - no permit needed for my Colorado plated street vehicle
    2) If it's some sort of "trail" - a permit _might_ (or not) be needed.

In my time here in Colorado, I rarely visit "trails" that I think need a permit and thus rarely buy a permit. When I do, I visit the local sporting goods store where they have the permits in stock (in/out in 10 minutes).

The Jax in Broomfield will issue OHV permits. Other locations might also.

It seems the areas you need the sticker for are changing every year, and if I'm reading the description from Rainbow Falls correctly I think you might need a sticker to use any roads or trails that are on a MVUM, or just for what is considered an OHV trail, which for an OHV is anything on the map but for a plated vehicle it's just what is considered an OHV trail. wtf... I'm just buying the sticker and forgetting about it.

    From this page https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/psic...27704&actid=93

"Free Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) are available at your local Forest Service Ranger District office. Please pick up a MVUM before you head out. These maps identify the Forest Service roads and designated motorized trails, that are open to Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) use. All resident owned OHVs being operated on Forest Service system roads and trails, are required to have a valid Colorado OHV Registration. If the OHV is from another state, a Colorado OHV Use Permit is required. For motor vehicles with a valid state license plate being operating on designated OHV trails, a Colorado OHV Use Permit is also required."

Out my window I am. Snowed 4-5" in total since yesterday. I don't know how much the trail received. Are you suggesting we change our plans if there is a lot of snow down that way? How would we know before we get there?

Not suggesting any changes...just trying to get info out. Morrison got close to 10" according to family over there...in other words, debating whether I want to go etc, and others will have to make their own decisions.
