    Default Buena Vista 6/6/10

Barb and I took a quick trip yesterday to try out our new RTT and check out the high trails in Buena Vista. First, the tent is great and BV is always a great place to go. The Arkansas is running really fast as is everything in the area, most running close to the top of their banks. The trails we ran were pretty much as expected though wetter than expected too.

I guess I should have mentioned the creeks above are the ones running alongside Mt. Anterro & Tin Cup. The first trail we tried was Mt. Anterro which we fully expected to still be snowed in. It was and here are a couple pics showing why. The first looks pretty insignificant but the wet ground combined with what it really looked like stopped us. The second pic shows that if we made it past the first spot we would have been stopped a couple 100 yards later.

We did make it up to Baldwin Lake and beyond which was surprisingly clear. It got snowed in before we could get to the mine at the top though.

Tin Cup was pretty much the same, made it quite a way before seeing that there was no way to make it to the pass. There's probably somewhere around a 10 foot deep drift before the pass.

Nice report, Chris. Almost wiki-like in its zen-ness.

So it looks like the tent accentuates the Cruiser lean. Maybe you should fold it out the other side.

It's called fatigue Rob. Our lesson learned from this trip was not to try to sleep by a very fast-moving creek.

Cruiser lean? That's something I haven't paid attention to for years.

Yeah, I can swap sides but my concern is just getting it up there.

I guess that was a lame way of saying you should Wiki your trip. I think the Wiki would be an excellent trail status tool, particularly this time of year as trails slowly open, if everyone who went out, even just exploring, would make a Wiki post. Everyone then could check Wiki to see what the most current status/condition of a trail is.

Duh. Yeah, like I said I'm tired. I'll wiki this of course because if I don't nobody will.

Yes, I know you and Scrubicon have wiki'd as well.

Thanks for the pictures and report!

I always carry ear plugs of one kind or another in my ditty bag junk. That way if it rains or hails really hard or I end up parked next to a stream, I can get some sleep. Course I lose the ability to hear anything else...

Awesome pics. No kidding about those streams running big! And I use ear-plugs all the time. Troy snores!

I started carrying ear plugs when I camp years ago. It started on one of the first wall climbs we did in Yosemite or Zion and we spent the night on a ledge part way up the climb in bivi bags. We got hammered by a storm sometime during the night and the rain beating down on the bivi sacks kept us awake all night long. Nothing like finishing a big wall climb with almost no sleep and knowing that you are both tired and in a situation where making a stupid mistake can cost you your life

The water levels apparently are at record levels right now, it looks like the high trails will be open soon. Anterro and Baldwin just needs a few drift busters or folks with shovels and a strong back to speed things up. Sounds like something SCrubicon would enjoy. Tin Cup need time, that's just too much for anything other than mother nature to take on.

The RTT worked well, easy and quick to put up and down Ash. It would be faster if neighboring campers didn't gather around to watch and ask questions though.

Ear plugs will now always be with us.

No. Who are they, climbers? They may know me from the name I write under, Peter Hubbel. They may also have cursed me a time or two, much like people curse Charles Wells and for the same reason: we both write or have written guide books. Something that I have tried to explain to Charles, too. You write a guide book of any kind, you aren't going to win a popularity contest...

LMAO Pete, I'll see if they do know you. Amanda put up the 1st 5.14c (I think that was the level) Haluconogeine in the black Canyon. And Luke was on SAR in Yosemitie during most of the 90's.
