I just realized that I never created a "planned trail run" for this Moab trip. It gives me another reason to advertise it. We've got 2 and a maybe right now...

I'll probably make that one.
Is it on the calendar?
Yeap. Edited the orig post with a link...
I'll be making this one. I have a trip to CA to see my son that weekend but I think I can change it.
Might be time to start thinking about a plan here. I've never been so I'll start throwing out questions and you guys answer
1. When are we leaving. This one is easy for me. I'll be leaving mid afternoon on Thursday and plan on getting into Moab kinda late. Thats just because of work.
2. Who wants to lead the trail runs and what type of runs are we doing. I vote to keep it simple to moderate since this is my virgin experience for Utah wheeling but I am also a follower and will venture into danger as I submit to peer pressure.
3. Specific trails?
4. Where are we sleeping? Josh suggested somewhere along the highway or some other place that only wheelers go. I'm easy. I'd hate to look for a camping spot at night in the dark but if thats the plan, then I can deal with it.
4. When are we leaving? I'm leaving Sunday. My guess is that I will be leaving Sunday morning (as this is what I typically do for all camping trips) as this gives us some home time before going back to work.
Aaron
Probably best to meet somewhere in Moab since I like early starts and staggered leaving times is what typically happens anyway.
I agree with that trail choice to suit everyone and be kept fairly easy.
Fins & Things is a must for everyone's first visit.
I'm partial to Top of the World
Elephant Hill has great variety but makes for a long day unless camping along the way, if camping is the plan the Devil's Kitchen is a great spot complete with porta-potty.
Leaving? Why leave!
Not completely official, but I'm pretty much out on this one. I would feel really bad skipping out on my Sister's graduation, which is Saturday the 15th.
That said, it really depends on what you are looking for with camping. Power, water, close to town? Slickrock is great. Something more basic? Sandflats or the numerous sites along Highway 128. These will at least have toilets and maybe water. Lots and lots to choose from for even more "fend for yourself" camping. As of now, we are staying at Area BFE for the trip starting this week.
Fins n Things is a great trail and pretty much anyone with a low range transfercase could make it on this trip, though the Stock vehicles would scrape on a few places. Porcupine Rim is supposed to easy and scenic too. If you dig Fins, go do Hells Revenge. You can bypass the big parts, and the rest is fun stuff with big steep hills, awesome views, various sizes of "hot tubs" and just enough challenge to make it fun and a bit scary, but not particularly hard or dangerous. For a long, but fun day, Poison Spider sounds like a blast. Only one really challenging obstacle called The Golden Crack, but from what I hear, its more intimidating then difficult. Plenty of other distinct obstacles, but most have bypasses and shouldn't be an issue. You are only there for two days essentially, so it hard to pick just two to go on. If you get bored one of the nights, going out to the Area BFE test area is awesome. Mild to wild there, and lots of fun little things to play on. Its about 10 miles outside of Moab going south, but worth the trip.

Isn't Porcupine Rim the one where everyone takes pics of their truck out on the ledge? It was my 2nd Moab trail with my 100% stock truck except sliders which paid for themselves that day. Nobody should think about it w/o sliders unless it changed a lot. I was also stock on F&T and no issues except for my usual tail dragging.
So, are you saying Devils Canyon for camping the whole time or only if we do Elephant Hill?
Chris, sounds like you are the leader! I'll be a follower and let you decide the trails on this one. Pictures at top of the world look like a necessity though.
Not every night, too far from everything to do that. It's something like 75 miles from downtown Moab so it's not practical to camp there. It's inside Canyonlands so there's a fee ($10?) and I don't know what camping regs may apply. Maybe Roktaxi can tell us.
I'm not a camper so know little about that stuff though I can lead if I'm the only one that's somewhat familiar with the trails. I'm not going to decide the trails alone Aaron.
I'm not a fan of KOA but the one in Moab is having a special that weekend with a free night. Still steep for camping at 60-ish per night but at least we have a destination...
Thoughts?
$79 per night for the River Canyon Lodge in Moab for the hotel. I could be talked into it if..
Thats 257 total for 3 nights for a 2 queen suite. With 4 of us I'd need the whole thing but perhaps Rob and Chris could bunk up and split the cost... I love camping as much as the next guy (probably more) but not lugging the tent across 2 states in a cramped jeep sounds good too...
Whatever Rob and you decide is fine with me, I usually stay at Adventure Inn but there's no pool.
I dont need a pool. Just a couple of beds!
Then I vote camping
I guess what I'm saying is, at a reasonable rate, I choose hotel Rob?
The Adventure Inn sounds good to me. Old bones like soft mattresses. Chris, I don't mind bunking with you (but not in the literal sense) if Barb's staying home.
I'd also vote for Fins & Things and Top of the World. Sounds like those are must-run trails for Moab virgins.
