    Default Manual Trans Fluid

Needing to do a fluid change before I take my trip in Dec. I was looking in the owners manual and all it says for fluid type is "oil". Ummmm What kind, type, weight should I be using?
Oh yeah for those that don't know it's a 91 Isuzu Pick up.

Thank you for your advice and opinons

Also while I'm here and at it what should I use in my front and rear diffs?

gear oil is going to be the route, 90wt prolly in the diffs, but the tranny might be a different weight.

Sometimes auto part stores can tell you what the manufacturer recommends. Or you can call the service department at a dealership, and ask what kind and how much.

I like that idear! I had a Honda that took motor oil, a Mopar that had ATF in the manual gearbox. It's good to know the actual specification.

Chances are 90-140 gear oil in the diffs, but like everyone suggested, double check for the tranny and transfer case.

I have also had vehicles that required specific fluids other than what you would normally use...best to check.

Have you checked the Isuzu stuff we have on this site? There is a lot, including an FAQ:

    http://frontrange4x4.com/forums/show...9391#post69391

    This from a google:

    Type: 3.2L SOHC/DOHC, 24-valve, V6, aluminum alloy block and heads, timing belt driven with chain drive on the 2 cams on DOHC engine Displacement: 3165cc Bore x Stroke: 93.4 x 77mm (3.677 x 3.031 in.) Timing: 5 [degree] BTDC @ 750 rpm Spark Plug Gap: (1.05mm) 0.04 in. Valve Clearance: Intake & Exhaust-hydraulic Oil Capacity: w/filter (5.4L) 5.7 Qt Fluid Specs: Engine Oil-* SAE 1OW-30 M/T & Trans. Case-* SAE 5W-30 A/T-Dexron 11 Brake-Dot-3 Power Steering-Dexron, Dexron II Front And Rear Axle-API GL-5 * Check owner's manual

    This from another one:

If its a venture 1500 series it should take 75/90 synthetic GM#123-77916. If its a Borg Warner T5 it should take dexron3

Looks like a call to a dealer is in order....

80-90 or 85-140 would be my best guess.

Forgot to ask them this ---- do you change it like your oil.... every 3000 miles or what?
    Anyone know this one?

Again thanks for all the help...

Less often since the gear boxes don't deal with the internal combustion process.

Less often for sure, but I don't know the interval. On the Yota it is something like 30k for the diffs and 50-60k for the tranny and transfer case oil, but it runs a much heavier gear oil. I usually change it at much shorter intervals than that, but it always depends on what the oil looks like when I check it.

I would double check with another dealer or service center, though. 5-30w seems really light for using as a gear oil. It is more what you would run in your engine in cold weather..not necessarily what you would run in the gear boxes or diffs..Just my $0.02...
