    Default Red Cone August 15th

A couple of us are going up Redcone on August 15th. We'll be meeting at the Safeway in Conifer, off the Conifer Town Center Parkway exit, at 8:00 am and leaving there at 8:30 to head to the trail.

Original meet time is back on.

We'll be heading up Red Cone then over to Radical Hill and down through Saints John to Montezuma. We'll end up comming back over US6 and down I70.

Last time I ran it my buddy hydro-locked his XJ just above timberline in a BIG puddle and we had to tow him back down and have his dad bring a trailer to get it home. He snapped 3 rods and we just put in a used motor.

Due to a conflict this MAY turn into an afternoon trip, meeting at 1:30pm at the Safeway. I'll post up the final time midweek, sorry if that screws anybody up.

    Dave,

Actually meeting later may open the doors for people that work sat am!!
Meeting later also is easier for parents who will be bringing kids on the trip.
    Just a thought.

Cool! I like lightning! And what better place to see and savor it than from above timberline on a high peak in the middle of the afternoon! And that really nice St Elmo's Fire glow that forms around metal and the way your hair stands on end due to static electricity before you get hit makes for some cool pictures!

We may do this trail, but will start earlier to avoid the above and possibly see you on the way down.

Lightning sucks...having been hit by it, having had 2 friends die from being hit, having had friends get hit and suffer permanent nerve damage, get holes blown in them, lose a hand, get half their face blown off, get their teeth blown out, etc, etc. I actually try to avoid it when possible. Something to consider especially if you are planning on bringing any kids along....

I have also been on way too many big rock climbs where I had no option but to sit out lightning storms hanging on the side of the cliff face. Nothing like enjoying a real fireworks display with the thought going through your head that" at least it will be over fast if we get nailed"...

Besides which, epics are fun, aren't they?...Well....aren't they? Ask anyone who has had one recently....

That said, anyone want to get started early?

I had thought of that and I'd still prefer to do it in the morning. I just may have to work till noon. If anyone wants to go early that is fine with me and if I can make it then great!

If I go, I would prefer an early start too. That's the one trail I don't want to be at the top when the gods start throwing bolts! You can't rush down that one!!

It's not midweek yet, I still don't know if I have to work. My boss may be going out of town and unfortunately, he is not the greatest at planning ahead.

Brody, if you are planning on going then I'll leave it at the earlier time and if I can make it then great, and if not do you mind heading it up?

Can do and I really hope you can make it! I missed the midweek thing three times now....

I get a little spooked by lightning having had a few bad experiences with it. I have also spent about 40 years doing stuff in the back country and high peaks here and have a lot of respect for just how bad things can get very quickly. Just something that I would rather avoid if possible.

Brody I am right there with you. I always try to be back below tree line early afternoon. I hate getting caught up high when the weather rolls in.
