Thread: My main hobby before wheeling.

Default My main hobby before wheeling.

I was an Uber computer geek in high school. I would mod PCs kind of like how people build hot rods. I was never great at it but I did win a couple of contests.

This is the first completely custom case I built. I used 80/20 extruded aluminum for the frame and plexiglass for all the panels.

I have my logo all over these pics because I used to be paranoid that someone would use them.

This is a small PC I built for a lan party using an old SGI case.

I took first place in this case mod competition in Colorado Springs.

Here are the insides of that case:

This is my current PC. It's my first and only attempt at water cooling. 4yrs later and this still runing strong. Its because of this case that I was able to buy my lift kit for my jeep. I had won a Pentium 4 processor in a case mod competition, sold it and used the money to buy the lift kit.

I have been building my own comps for quite a few years now this one was my fav. when i was living in the college dorms my roommates come up me and asked what the hell the green light was coming from underneath my door. i told him i work with the gov conducting UFO experiments. he wasn't sure how to take that. LOL. I built that one quite a while ago and i'm itching to build a new machine!

how did the liquid cooling work out for you? i'm thinking thats going to be going on my next machine. however i've head some conflicting reports about condensation collecting and frying components. did you ever have to worry about condensation?

I really havent researched the topic in a few years but from what I remember condensation becomes a worry when you start dealing with some extreme cooling. Like using peltiers.

    Cool stuff guys!

Hmmm, wonder if I can build a liquid cooled, blue light, 17" screen, OSX laptop to replace the dying POS I use?

The last one I built was a few years ago...overclocked everything on it, maxed the ram, tweaked the cooling, etc, but decided not to go with any of the liquid cooling stuff. I stopped doing games on computers simply because I was spending a fortune on video cards trying to keep up. I just built the computer to do what I needed it to and bought a dedicated gaming platform...

Now I am working on building a server...and getting a couple of laptops running...and getting a Mac to work...

If you do the cooling right, you shouldn't have to worry about condensation. Just keep you case cross ventilated really well...

I like this thread! It gives a little insight into the folks on the site, what the do , have done, hobbies, etc...nice!

Pretty cool stuff guys!!! I gave up on the uber high tech goodies not too long after I received my degree in graphics. Back then I was geeking out on a NewTek Video Toaster with LightWave 3D to model, render, and animate. Now, (years and years and years later) it's a 4 year old HP clunker under the desk for me. I stretch a cable out of the office and across the living room floor to plug in to the cable modem....ha ha ha...

    Yep, pretty cool!

Before I figured out the wireless thing and had a used labtop, I ran the cable from the basement, up the stairs to the living room. :o

I'm too cheap to go wireless. A $10 Ethernet cable is good enough for me
