    Default Ham Radio

I think this is a re-post but since I couldn't find the previous here's a new one. I'm looking for feedback about a good starter radio and antenna for my first radio.

I'm licensed (technician) but not experienced. My kids want me to have more resources when my wife & I venture into the hills alone. Yeah, we do that.

The problem I'm having is filtering through the abundance of info. I've heard so many variations of everything that personal experience is what I'm hoping to hear right now.

I'm looking at the Yaesu 2800 because of price and reputed durability.

When I looked at the ham stuff on the internet, I can see where that would be a problem. A huge bunch of information...I figured that you were looking for some feedback from someone in the know, but no one else was responding. I can't help with any personal experience, nor do I know anyone who does this. If I hear of someone, I'll try to get you hooked up.

I'll ask my old man what he uses. He's been into Ham for at least 25 years now.

I'm just looking for a mobile set, no base station. Just another tool to get me out of trouble if the need arises.
