    Default 2023 2nd Adopt-a-Trail Clean-up Run

Hello everyone. Now that its past labor day, it's time to start planning our end of year adopt-a-trail cleanup run. Please respond to the poll with any and all days you would be available and likely to join us. I've been in touch with Patrick at the forest service, and he has a conflict on the 23rd and 24th but his seasonal assistant would be able to fill in if needed. We'll probably avoid that weekend unless it stands out significantly in the polling.

Now for the cut-and paste from my previous posts:

For any new members or anyone who has not participated in a cleanup run before: we have two trail runs each year where we volunteer for the USFS and pick up trail trash. Our adopted trails are Barbour Fork and Devil's Canyon, both close to Idaho Springs. We split into two groups and run/clean both trails simultaneously. It's a great opportunity to give back a little, to be good stewards of the off-road community, and to meet/chat with other forum members as we spend a bit more time outside of our vehicles compared to a typical run.

Please fill out the poll and let us know what weekends you may be available. This poll is just a gauge of interest so we can coordinate a weekend with the USFS to maximize participation. Please check any and all dates where you believe you will be free to join us. I will provide the Forest Service with our top 3 results at the end of this week and once we settle on a date I will add a planned trail run to the calendar.

    Thank you.

Will have to miss this one unfortunately as we will be away from end of September through October. Hopefully you get a good turnout!

Sorry to be missing this clean up run as well as all the runs this season.

As some of you are aware our Jeep broke down early July shortly after our return from Australia.

The problem was the computer, which went out. Our mechanic could not locate a new one so after about 4 weeks he decided to have it rebuilt. We just got word today it is running. Now the secondary issue is fixing the rear main seal. This 2002 TJ is becoming a money pit. Not sure I even feel comfortable taking it into the mountain anymore.

Sorry to miss the clean up. We leave Thursday through most of October on our annual trip across the south to visit family.

    Well bummer.

Is your jeep a manual or automatic trans - if auto - if the rear main isn't leaking too bad - just run it through the end of the season and keep engine oil up to snuff. If a manual, it can soak the clutch and make it slip - but it might need to be real bad for this to happen. Bottom line - so long as oil pressure is good and you keep oil filled - run it and enjoy it (and park it where you don't mind the drips).

I drove an MG-B from CA to IL for family - I purchased oil BY THE CASE as the rear main (manual trans) leaked so bad. The back of the car was coated in oil. Only when I came into central Illinois did I have issues with the clutch slipping.

My YJ leaked / dripped for several months before I bothered replacing the seal. `never had clutch issues.

If nothing happens this season - spring will soon be upon us!

Sorry to hear your Jeep is giving you issues. As Jim mentioned the oil leak at the rear main isn't that big of deal. Mine leaks on my 02 TJ as well and has for years. I have the replacement gaskets just need to find the motivation. Other good news is it is one of the easiest rear mains to replace due to being a two piece gasket.
The computer issue is a pain but glad they got it running again.

The Jeep is auto. We were told he is already working on the rear main seal. It was leaking pretty bad before we left for NZ/AU. We were hoping to hold off but since the computer went out we decided to go ahead and fix the seal which doesn't take as long but there will be no time left to run it before we leave on the trip. Everytime we think we have replaced everything to make it like new again something else happens. Guess I will see you guys next summer. 😞

Sorry folks. This got away from me.... mainly due to travel and some other things. I'm sending the top 3 days over to Pat now and should hopefully have a date in the next day or 2.

Just heard back from Patrick. He'd like to try and get this done this weekend (30th) as it's uncertain if there will be a govt' shutdown on Oct1.

I'm going to go ahead and put this on the calendar for this saturday the 30th. I know it's shorter than ideal notice, but as it was our top result I'm hopeful we can obtain a similar turnout to the October dates. I will reiterate this in the planned run page, but if it's looking like a poor turnout come Friday morning I will reschedule for one of the october dates and we can figure out if we can run this without Patrick and log the hours and attendance. If it's looking OK, then I will be sure to confirm the run on Friday morning as well.

Lastly, I'd like to apologize to the group for dropping the ball here. This would be a lot cleaner if I had done this last week. This is on me.

So as of this time we have 3 participants. That's a bit lighter than I had hoped for so I'm going to go ahead and postpone this.

I suppose we can just wait until Sunday and see what happens. Talking to Patrick it sounds like if there is a shutdown the guidance he received was that there can be no official club sponsored activities. I was hoping i could get a form of some kind to log the volunteer hours then submit it when they return but it doesn't sound like an option. It would also appear that Saturday is a bit of a scramble for them to tie up as many loose ends as possible so one less thing is probably not so bad for him.

So that leaves what do we do next. I'd be interested to hear what others think. In my opinion I think a shutdown is more likely than not. If it happens there's really nothing that prevents us from going out and picking up trash, we just wouldn't be able to log the volunteer hours with the FS. Or we just put a pin in it until spring or early summer. The poll showed decent interest for October 7 but it's been a bit. We could repoll for the the weekends of the 7th and 14th.

    Any input would be appreciated.

Just my $.02. Smart move postponing. I would say do an unofficial cleanup if the shutdown happens.

Oct 7 was the next highest interest on the poll.

Perhaps just cancel this 30th event and change it to Oct 7th.

I can help with any admin edits, if needed, just post in the thread or PM me.

I can send an all members message, if you so wish, with a message of your choosing. Perhaps a message stating - the fall cleanup is moved to Saturday Oct 7 due to low turnout for Sep 30.
