    Default Chasing my tail

So ever since I ran the Spring Creek trail a few weeks ago my '02 Jeep JT has had a hesitation/miss at idle. At higher rpm's it will smooth out and run fine (though with a noticeable loss of power) but after a few hours of wheeling and the CEL being on the jeep really started to give me issues so much so I had to limp it to the nearest shop... a NAPA in Idaho Springs. A quick scan showed 3 codes, misfire in cylinder 3, cylinder 6, and a random cylinder misfire. Replaced the coil in the parking lot and the Jeep seemed to run fine back to Denver until the hesitation/miss returned just before getting home.

Fast forward two weeks and I have replaced the fuel injectors, light tested the injector harness to confirm power was getting to the injectors, tested the fuel pressure at the injector rail, tested for any leak down in the fuel system, tested the voltage at the fuel pump, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the IAC and TPS, tested all 4 (yes 4) O2 sensors finding one bad one which was promptly replaced. After all this no luck on solving the issue. Now you might be yelling at your screen saying 'replace the spark plugs!' but one of the first things I did was remove, inspect and confirm gap on all of them. Even switched plugs to different cylinders plus they were only ~10k miles old. No dice. Still miss fire on cylinder 3 and 6.

Very frustrated at this point and thinking I might have a bigger cylinder issue, the wife finally convinced me to go ahead and replace the spark plugs to just to eliminate that as a problem. Problem solved. Runs smooth.

Moral of the story is even if you think it's not the issue, replace (or if possible eliminate) the simple, obvious issues before dumping a bunch of money into other things.... and trust what your wife says... she is always right

WOW - and you had swapped plugs but the issue stayed with 3 & 6.

Think of the bill a shop would have handed you for all of that diagnostic time...

Wow, I don’t fault you for not doing spark plugs after swapping them and the misfire staying in the same cylinders. That’s truly bizarre!

Exactly why I didnt replace the plugs in the beginning. I cleared the codes after replacing the coil and the CEL stayed off for about 25 miles though still missing at idle. Was really weird that it got worse the longer I drove it and was starting to think it was the ECM. Glad I didnt spend the money on replacing that!

    Matt - Totally agree.

Glad you sorted this out Mike! I’ve been chasing my front coil spring issue ever since then also…… this weekend I removed the coil to find that the original rubber isolator pads for the front upper coils were still in place and all mangled and deformed. These were supposed to be replaced with new upper isolators made specifically for these springs. Ordered them and will be replacing them this week (hopeful) or weekend.
This is a pretty simple fix but very time consuming and it took me weeks to chase it down, checking torque on steeeing, control arms, etc…..
I really hope to get this sorted so I can get back in a trail soon!

I had to have an a fuel injector replaced last week. On my way home from work, my check engine light came on and then started flashing and chiming (just to really annoy me). Google told me about the misfire and fuel injectors. $400 bucks later, I was back on the road. But they did a bunch of other stuff too, so I didn't think that was too bad. They also game me a loner car for two days so I didn't have to rent a car!

The loaner car bit is a nice thing for a shop to do.

Iv seen a lot of problems (especially with Mopar) fixed with PCM reprogram.
Toyota drivability diagnosing started with a reprogram to current specs.
