    Default Peak 10 (Breckenridge) - Saturday 7/8

My niece is in town for a few weeks so I want to take her up a relatively easy trail with great views and this one fits the bill. It may not be fully open/clear by then so I am open to alternatives or we may just take it as far as we safely can. The date is set however due to other plans, let me know if anyone else would like to join.

Nice trail - good views. It's interesting to drive through "ski run" territory.

Other good views, above timberline trails that come to mind - Kingston Peak from the south I think is fairly easy. Perhaps Bill Moore Lake from Empire (and out to Empire) - but that might be snowed in still.

    What do others think?

Don’t think Kingston typically opens until 7-15. Perhaps Rollins Pass from the West side. Argentine Pass and McClellan Mtn come to mind.

Interesting- according to BRD Kingston Peak gates are open https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/arp/r...telprdb5339508 but they also list 7/15 as the opening date... If Peak 10 isn't open the Peru Creek area is fantastic for out of towners too, but I'd vote Kingston Peak as well. I like taking people from out of town on Kingston but from the north so they are on the scary side of the shelf section in the beginning. It's just after 3:00 in the video, and I am proud to say I believe I have the only trail video with the Dreidel song. There's also the Rock House and the Enchanted Forest, and you can continue to Loch Lomond at the end.

    Trail Highlights:
    3:10 The Infamous Shelf Section
5:45 Hiking Trailhead for James Peaks Lakes
    6:56 Climbing the first hill
    8:13 Break at the top
    10:52 Climbing the second hill
    12:00 The Rock House
    14:52 The Enchanted Forest
    15:43 Descending to Alice

Thank you all for the input. Kingston looks awesome but we will be doing the St Mary's glacier hike this weekend which is in the same area. I think I will keep Peak 10 as the primary and keep an eye on conditions/status. This will also allow us to spend a little time in Breckenridge after the trail so she can see the town. If that's not looking good I think Argentine will be the alternate.

I would be into Argentine if plans change. I did Peak 10 with Jim a number of years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed it. But I am not into driving that far to do it again.

Here is poor Tom following behind me on Peak 10....one of the first high elevation runs I took the CJ on years ago...it was not running lean, that is for sure!

that first one was the screen saver for many years on my previous computer - the one I used for teaching. Must have been seen by a lot of students.

Is driving Peak 10 allowed? I had Peak 9 on my list but a few years ago was told NFS no longer allows it. Is this true?

I haven't heard of Peak 9, but when I look it up it comes up as a hiking/mountain biking trail. Peak 10 is a vehicle trail and definitely accessible.

Peak 9 is also a ski trail/NFS road right next to Peak 10. I had it on my bucket list for years and was finally going to ride up it but was told the NFS shut it down to private vehicles. It's a drivable road during summer so I have no clue why they would shut it down unless it has to do with keeping it clear for emergency vehicles. If that's the case, seems they would shut down all FS trails but that, they do not do. Guess I need to call the NFS and see if it is open to vehicles. I would love to drive where I have only skied.

`agree. I do not see any trails to Peak 9 - single track or two track - via satellite image.

The Peak 10 two-track is mis-labeled via Google satellite as "Peak 9 Road" FSR 751. That road does not head up to Peak 9 and is the Peak 10 road. Perhaps the map mis-label is where you are thinking of Peak 9??

Maybe so. I thought it was in my old Charles Wells book as Peak 9.

Well, the book Colorado Byways list Peak 9 and 10 together in the index, but I think it's actually Peak 10.
I never learned how to add attachments to the post. Can I email you the books information, Jim?

Attachements - for allowed file types, are attached by clicking the "Go Advanced" button in the quick reply window. Once the Advanced reply window is open, there is an "Upload Photos" button. I should re-name it "Attach files" or some such. Once you click that a screen opens to select your file to attach it.

As for emailing book info - use the Private Message function.
