Default Help installing transfer case Nov 5 or 6?

Hi all, my front drive shaft has given up and Iíve decided to use this as an opportunity to switch to a 4WD transfer case on my AWD Mountaineer. Installing the new one is a two man job, so I could use some help. I plan on taking all the old components out myself and would just need help for a couple hours to put the new case in, ideally on Sunday. Let me know if anyone is willing to help, I will compensate for your time!

I live in Washington Park West in Denver.

I think youíll need someone with a good scanner caus if Iím not mistaken the AWD is controlled throw the PCM.

Interesting. Iíve done a lot of reading on Explorerforum and no one mentioned anything about the PCM for the conversion. I am pretty sure the AWD is all mechanical using some kind of viscous coupling in the transfer case, so it shouldnít affect the computer. I hope thatís the case but the truck can sit a bit if there are some odds and ends after converting.

I did have someone offer to help so hopefully we can knock it out next weekend.

This is an interesting project, i wish I could help you out as I live in Denver but I won't be available that weekend. Are you adding some sort of shift lever/selector?

Yes, the transfer case is manual shift so I will need to cut a hole in the floor and install the lever. They have electronic shift versions that would be a cleaner look but those are much more complicated to install with the wiring and computer modules. This is a common upgrade in the explorer community since Ford decided to only offer the V8s with AWD for some reason. This thread outlines the procedure:

I was planning on doing this down the road, but with the driveshaft going out and after getting stuck on the trail I took those as signs that its time!

I could possibly help on either day. We have bowling league on Sunday's at 7pm so I'd need to leave your place by 5pm to ensure I make it home. I have no idea what in the world you're doing so if I'd just get in the way, I understand. I know what a hammer is though and I can hand it to you... If you need someone with more know how, I understand.

    Isak,
I'd be glad to help!! - BUT we are going to AZ Wednesday for a long camping weekend.
Low range will be a game changer for you!!!!!! So much that you have done with momentum will now be a easy "idle over" obstacle !!
I could help the next weekend though.

Mike - thank you for the offer, I do have someone coming to help so I should be ok. This will be my first time doing anything of this scale so hopefully it goes smoothly.

Dave - I am excited to feel the difference! Hopefully I can get a run in somewhere before the snow covers everything.
