Default Please tell me what you know about Mount Antero!

My husband, daughter and son-in-law want to check Antero off their list of 14ers. I offered to drive them as high up as I can get and wait for them to summit and hike back to me. Trails Offroad has some great pictures! Other than it being a shelf road the whole way, is there anything else I should know? Any obstacles I should be concerned about?

I've driven quite a few times over the years. Jen was just up there on wed with the ecj5 group. No obstacles of note....just lots of bumpy road to the creek, then lots of shelf road and switchbacks. Biggest concern is T-storm issues. They made it to the last few switchbacks and got chased off by T-storm....it's been wet and rainy recently so find a good weather window (later Aug early September is good). Early start is good.

Agree with James. Drove it several years ago. Extremely bumpy to the river, then shelf and switchback. Trail goes most of the way to the summit. Don't believe it would count as an official 14er summit if starting climb from the top of the trail.

Nothing too severe at all when I did it. My videos of the route

Mnt. Antero has become one of my favorite trails. I have done it 3 times in the past 2 years. Nothing to be concerned about ecept if you want to go to the lake. That side of the trail is a little harder. I would like to go back up there some day to do the trail the is right of the river crossing that leads up to another lake. You won't have anything to worry about as long as shelf roads don't give you puase. Because as they aren't Black Bear narrow, they are not something I would take someone on that can't handle them. Well worth the trip!

Thanks for all the videos and comments! I'm sure the hikers won't ride with me all the way up, but they'll be glad to have a lift back down! I'm looking forward to it!

One more question... I know it is very narrow. Is the possibility of being able to pass someone going the opposite direction going to be a constant hassle? I think I would be terrified if I had to back up for a long distance out on that ledge.

not on the lower part below the creek crossing, but once you are above tree line, it is a bit of hassle to pass. Single vehicle passing single vehicle is not too bad, but small group trying to pass a small group on the switchbacks is a little bit of a pain.

One can often pass at the switchbacks and there are a number of other wide areas to pass. That said there are some narrow areas where passing would be difficult.

They mine gemstones up there and one guy brings up a tracked rig every year to his claim and does some maintene ce.

Most of the time you can use the pull outs at each switchback and wait there for traffic to make their way past you. Only one spot that you have to commit without knowing if it's clear. I have never had a problem with the traffic all three times I have ran the trail. But you do have a soft edge like most of the shelf roads above 13,000 ft. And that's where most people get themselves in trouble. Don't being on that edge cause it is to steep to take a chance.

I would agree groups passing would be a pain. I was thinking 1 or 2 rigs at a time..
