    Default Devil's Canyon / Winching & Lifting hands-on (Sun July 31)

`Word from those that were there, it was a productive event.

Five vehicles and one open space - that offered a bit of a slope (also put to use). We had the list of ideas and started from the top. An idea was floated to the group and "who's interested in trying it". Those interested then set up vehicles for the exercise - vehicle pulling; vehicle being an anchor point (stand in for a tree / anchor point); vehicle being pulled. Straight pull, straight pull but between two ahead anchor points, 90 degree pull, force multiplication pull, Hi-Lift jack fun (all sorts of stuff), broken bead reseating, respooling.

Traffic on the trail seemed quite light. Clouds were about perfect / not hot and not too cool. Rain let us know it was nearby but it was a non-issue.

As was mentioned the Red Elephant vehicle removal (and the winching setup photos) - here is a link to the photos:
    www.JimWilliamson.net/automobile/2013-05-26--trail--extraction--lefthand-canyon-vin/

Schmitty was the photographer for the day. He'll have some good photos before long.

I got a couple photos of the event shenanigans here: FR4x4 - Winch n rescue

    A few noteworthy ones:

Tom showing off his homemade soft shackle:

Steve-O demonstrating how to bottlejack an axle:

Trying to debead the stock Rubicon wheel from Udi's Jeep:

And lastly a neat shot of Jim's YJ:

I totally forgot this was yesterday, in my head I thought it was next weekend! What were you doing with the 4-way connection with 4 rigs?

A 90 degree pull - somewhat mimicking the setup (though with only one winch line and shorter runs) for the Red Elephant vehicle removal...

Mimicking a vehicle down off the road. A vehicle on the road with a right angle pull iirc. If just using the green jeep tree angle would not have pulled directly up the imagined slope.

Definitely value added for me, I will feel a lot more confident the next time I need to break out the recovery gear or winch myself if I decide to solo again sometime. Thanks!

It seems there is enough interest to have another... Yet this season should work.

For all of the synthetic lines I am surprised there was no "plastic donut" snatch block device at hand.

I'm still steel line so none of those newfangled things in my bit of kit. I assumed they were plastic but I guess metal might be needed (friction / plastic melt issues perhaps). I like the "rope retention" aspect - there must be enough need for the items to be added.

    That's tragic.

I read somewhere that using static ropes for "tugging" is a huge no-no. A similar instance happened here, but the guy only needed facial reconstructive surgery...
