Default Learning winching / hi-lift jack use

There was discussion to have a winching & jack use event / trail run. Who's interested?

It would be a get together at a trail that offers reasonable space for vehicles to gather (Devil's Canyon comes to mind as a centrally located trail with a large-ish open, flat-ish area).

We'd discuss issues of winching and jacking. Those who wish to put to use winching and jacking would be able to - getting some first-hand experience.

I offer what knowledge and equipment I have though I'd expect it to be a casual group experience with many folks offering tips and equipment to try.

A goal is to get first hand experience with the equipment you have.

    Who's interested?

i will add: If you are new and don't own a Hi-Lift or a Winch and are interested to learn about it anyway, anyone is welcome to practice with my stuff.

    I'll second the motion.

I see this as more of a "hands-on" event than a teacher-class event - though I do see it to be fairly structured with one item being used (winch / jack / etc) and everyone not directly involved, to be watching. I see several "teachers" involved - but yet not a free-for-all event. Safety in learning is at the fore.

Let's see if we can firm up some list of topics:

    Winching:
Safety concerns (catastrophic line breakage, vehicle undesired movement, melted battery terminals [internet fiction?], synthetic vs steel line, soft shackles vs steel D-rings), hooks vs. captive
    Straight-line winching
Angled winching (snatch block off of an anchor / tree savers)
Force multiplication winching (something I have yet to do)
Maximum line length pull (how much can be spooled out and winch force vs. "layers of line")
Synthetic line abrasion concerns - abrasion sleeve
    Re-spooling (how-to)
    Steel line lubrication
    Steel line kinks / barbs
Line length multiplication (adding straps w/o them becoming forced together so they can be readily separated / not using heavy metal when connecting items - should a catastrophic break happen)

    Lifting / Jacking / Hi-Lift / Farm Jack:
    Safety concerns
    Lubrication for ease of function
Ratchet strap to hold the jack into the bumper
Chain or strap to attach an axle to a frame before lifting (flat tire issue) so that the hi-lift does not need full length jacking
Using a hi-lift to move a vehicle sideways (stuck in snow/mud)

Does anyone have any hi-lift accessories to use (wheel lift accessory, etc)?

    What should be added?

I'd like the group to be filled with those who have never done "X" before - this would be a good opportunity to get first hand experience.

We used those on your torsion bar issue, yes? I recall the Lift-Mate as being a nice accessory.

I'm interested as well. I have a synthetic line winch, straps, shackles, and a snatch block (and a chain saw, if needed)

because, you know, when a lift fails and a vehicle falls on a leg - sometimes a chain-saw comes in handy ;-)

(but then, safety-wise, who would put a body or appendage under a lifted mass...)

Exactly. Also, to bring back home some firewood. Or to remove that annoying branch that's scratching everyone's cars on the trail... Or to remove that large fallen tree that's lying on the trail after a storm. Pretty handy.

I would love to be involved as well! Just not the first week of August please as I’ll be out of town. Jim seems like a trustworthy guy, he helped me spool my brand new winch!

We might add re-seating a tire bead (fire restrictions depending - so probably not)
Starting fluid method vs basic air and hands to get a seal

OK - we have folks interested.

Is there any significant difference for Sunday vs. the typical Saturday? A Saturday is my pref though I can change to what most folks desire.
