    Default 2012 JK Wrangler starter

So I went to get gas just now when I tried to start my jeep it wouldn’t. Jump didn’t help. I hear a click and twu
twice it tried to crank but stopped.

Seems like a starter to me. Anyone disagree? Anyone replaced a started on a 2012 or newer JK? How was it to do?

If the key gives a starter "click" but not joy - the key and starting circuit seems to be working. I'd focus on the starter - it might have a bad spot.

Are you / is it stuck somewhere?

Not stuck. Son came and we towed it a few feet and I popped the clutch to start it.
I can hear the starter spin. Occasionally the solenoid kick in and it attempts to crank momentarily. One time I got it to crank long enough at home to start. Then just the starter spinning.

Swapped out starter relay and solenoid fuse with no change.

probably the brushes in the starter. the old hammer trick has worked for me in the past, but if not, starters aren't usually too hard to swap out. I've done it in the parking lot of O'Reilly's before...

Its the starter. Starter is backordered but they can get one from another dealer. Total installed expense apprx $950.
    Gonna have it done.

They also found rear axle seals bad and a couple of other things to the tune of another almost $2000.
No way can I afford that as I am on fixed income and need a new refrig. Ours os 22 years old. The wind blew down our fence and it needs replaced apprx 2.5 k. Also need to remodel a bath so we can be safe and stay in our home as we age.

Its looking a lot like my wheeling days are over, and I will be selling my jeep.

    Gosh darnit!

I'd happily stop down to tend the starter issue if that would help the situation. Let me know.

You want us to gather folks for a fence fixing party? I'd volunteer to pitch in. What's needed - some posts to put into holes. Cement for the holes?

We could get a group together to drop the cost to near zero (is the main portion of the fence re-usable?)

Thanks Jim. I had them do the starter and will be picking it up in the morning. I am hoping that they are just seeing a rear passenger axle seal seep that started while under warranty, and wasn’t severe enough to replace, and that this shop is just trying to make some extra bucks.

I am too depressed to think beyond that at the moment.

I'm in. I don't know much about fence building but I imagine you'll need a some young dumb muscle for this endeavor

Part of my issue with my fence is that when it blew down I went to the city building dept to see who ‘owned’ the fence. There was no building permit on record. So, its a commonly owned fence with my neighbors. Me and two others own it. I don’t want to pay for all of it and they do not seem too interested so its sitting in limbo for now.

Plus have you seen the current price of lumber. $52 ea for a 4x4x8 cedar fence post. Couple of years ago $12

How bad is it now? Is the full fence laying flat on the ground or just a few panels at issue (post some pictures if you wish)? Can panels be picked up and nicely set aside for a while?

35’ is completely down. Another 20’ or so has broken posts. I have completely dissembled and disposed of the 35’ with the exception of about 3 broken posts that are propping up the other 20’.

It was the wind in Feb? that blew it down, not the most recent wind.

If you still have the old fence you can reuse it, maybe. I had a similar thing and I added a couple of new posts between the old ones, so now I have a post every 4'. Screwed the old fence to the new posts and it's held just fine. Excuse the pavers iin the pics, I'm in the middle of a project, but you can see the new posts. Pretty easy to do too.

Is $950.00 for a starter typical for a JK? Seems about triple what it should be to me.

The fence is over 30 years old. Everything was rotting.

950 was for the starter and labor. Everything is jacked up these days. I wanted an oem starter because the reviews I have seen for others has serious longevity issues. This one has a 2 year warranty on the starter and labor.

I seriously thought about doing it myself. I have done a few on other vehicles. But after watching a couple of videos it looked like a b*tch. That said there apparently is also an starter actuator in the steering column that could have been this issue. I didn’t want to replace the starter only to find out it was the actuator.

OBTW this starter is on back order from the factory so there was a extra premium to get it quickly from another dealer.

Well I am glad I didn’t have them do the rear axle seals. I hadn’t looked recently, but did when I got home. The leak appears to me to be the same minor seep that wasn’t covered under warranty.

Guess I am not taking it Prestige Chrysler again.
