I have a handheld cb and a handheld GMRS, looking to get my HAM license. Just wondering what the majority of you all are using to talk to each other on the trail.

Recently pulled out my CB and installed GMRS.

CB was the common method until perhaps five years ago. Many folks are using handheld FRS/GMRS radios now. I have a set of FRS/GMRS handhelds and am moving away from them to a mounted GMRS radio.
A radio is not required though it is a nice convenience.
Tom actively uses ham - so if you have questions he'll likely respond.

Cool I think I'm going to go the HAM / APRS route for mounted, keep my GMRS/CB handheld. Thanks!

I have the BaoFeng UV-82HP, it’s okay. Eventually I’ll get something mounted but other mods are priority. If you do get a HAM radio, I’d recommend to print off the chart for channels to frequencies because a lot of people just use handhelds FRS/GMRS I’m finding.

I currently have one of these, it's super simple and cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Retevis-Walki...%2C115&sr=8-15
I prefer the UV-82's over the UV-5R's. No complaints about the 5R. The guts are probably darn near the same but the UV-82 is a little bigger and the keys are spaced apart a bit more which works well for my sausage fingers. The handhelds made by Wouxun aren't a bad step-up from the Baofungs... the receiver's are a little better. I really like my Wouxun KG-805G GMRS handheld.
If you go the HAM mobile route spend some time thinking through your antenna placement and installation. A mediocre radio and a good antenna installation will out perform a great radio with a poor antenna any day.

Anyone have advice on which handheld frs/gmrs radios are nice and loud? I wouldn't mind picking up another set, I hand mine out on the trail fairly often and the speaker in them is not nearly loud enough.

Rocky Talkie is a newer & local front range company that makes FRS handhelds for mountainous terrain. They have proven to be much better than any other reasonably priced handhelds I have previously used. I've been very happy with mine for rock climbing...the range has been quite great even in canyons
