Default Communications -what do you use?

I have a handheld cb and a handheld GMRS, looking to get my HAM license. Just wondering what the majority of you all are using to talk to each other on the trail.

CB was the common method until perhaps five years ago. Many folks are using handheld FRS/GMRS radios now. I have a set of FRS/GMRS handhelds and am moving away from them to a mounted GMRS radio.

A radio is not required though it is a nice convenience.

Tom actively uses ham - so if you have questions he'll likely respond.

APRS cause when I wheel alone someone can find me if I don’t return, can email or text my wife for help. Its ham related and requires a ham license. Its not for 2 way voice communication.

I prefer ham but few people in the group are licensed. GMRS for this group.

I would start with a Baofeng UV-5R. It a handheld and costs about $25. After you have used it awhile and better understand how you will be using it you can upgrade to a mobile unit. I use my uv5r for aprs with a 40 watt amp.
I also has a Yeasu FT-8900R. It a good radio and a quad band. Two of the bands are pretty worthless though. FT-7900 is a dual band and a pretty decent unit for your rig.

That said first starting one doesn’t know how far they will go with have. 3 license levels and different bands available with each license. The baofeng and the 7900 are suitable for your initial tech license.

If you get the baofeng also get a programming cable and the free chirp software to program it. Programming from the keypad is awful. https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home

I have the BaoFeng UV-82HP, it’s okay. Eventually I’ll get something mounted but other mods are priority. If you do get a HAM radio, I’d recommend to print off the chart for channels to frequencies because a lot of people just use handhelds FRS/GMRS I’m finding.

I prefer the UV-82's over the UV-5R's. No complaints about the 5R. The guts are probably darn near the same but the UV-82 is a little bigger and the keys are spaced apart a bit more which works well for my sausage fingers. The handhelds made by Wouxun aren't a bad step-up from the Baofungs... the receiver's are a little better. I really like my Wouxun KG-805G GMRS handheld.

If you go the HAM mobile route spend some time thinking through your antenna placement and installation. A mediocre radio and a good antenna installation will out perform a great radio with a poor antenna any day.

Anyone have advice on which handheld frs/gmrs radios are nice and loud? I wouldn't mind picking up another set, I hand mine out on the trail fairly often and the speaker in them is not nearly loud enough.

Thats why so many cheat and use the Baofeng with an external mike/speaker.

Rocky Talkie is a newer & local front range company that makes FRS handhelds for mountainous terrain. They have proven to be much better than any other reasonably priced handhelds I have previously used. I've been very happy with mine for rock climbing...the range has been quite great even in canyons

$95 for something limited by the strict regulations of FRS? Once GMRS licensing comes down to $35 on April 19th, you could buy a cheap GMRS radio, a license, and a 1/4 wave antenna to go on it and get better range for about the same price.

It looks like it definitely does have compact-ness going for it, though.

Yes... it was developed for a different situation than in a car. It has extra durability, water resistance, and is extremely compact. If range and power is the pure priority, then this isn't the top choice. My original purpose of them was for rock/mountain climbing, but they will still work great for group vehicle outings as well. I use my Spot sattelite communicator to handle the requirements for long distance emergency services.

Just an option for a local company.
