After working on setting up my 58 drivetrain as well as some discussion with Ty today as we looked at his suspension, and more specifically the rear axle shims associated with his leaf springs, I remembered this useful reference...I posted it in Ty's build thread, but really, it probably should just go here as a reference...thanks

Here is some further background information on how u-joints work in a driveline. This video is wonderful in portraying the elliptical path that the linked document above describes.

The video does not get into a double cardan joint (also sometimes referred to as CV joint...which isn't exactly correct, but that's aside from the point). With a double cardan joint, treat the two u-joints and angles shown here as a double cardan, but in a tighter package (no tube in between the two u-joints). When a third u-joint is thrown into the mix (generally at the axle end), it must be aligned to maintain that "constant velocity" that the double cardan joint allows for. This is why when a Slip Yoke eliminator (often with jeeps) is installed, the rear axle input shaft must be angled up to assure it doesn't ruin the work that double cardan is doing to maintain that constant velocity.
