I make sure to run it (Kelly Flats) at least once every year. The best parts are near the start and you can easily loop them. Heart Attack Hill provides a choose-your-own adventure style of difficulty. Worth the drive at least once to check it out.

Going on a busy day when there are other folks playing on the chutes is a lot of fun, too. If I had a rig to take up the chutes, I'd have to amend my statement about where the best parts are.

If you have never been to it - you should check it off of your list. I'd recommend that you give the chutes a try (I probably will if it's dry).

If you want a shorter day, it could be an in-and-out, turning back at the chutes, though I'd recommend to do the whole trail.

that just means less trail time for the same amount of hwy driving...its the hwy driving that I was originally trying to keep to a minimum - and will probably get stuck in rush hour on the way home, but Jen is working late Fri I believe.

Weather looks perfect, so I'd say lets give it a go, then I will spend the weekend winterizing the house and jeep before heading out of town (and maybe a ski day on Monday). Best place to meet at Ted's place at hwy 14 and 287? I am good with an early start, although I will have over a 2 hour drive to get to Teds and probably will need some gas there as well.

There's a better (scenic) route that keeps you on lower speed roads. Check out the route through Masonville (Buckhorn Rd to Stove Prairie Rd). For even more fun don't take Stove Prairie Rd and turn left to stay on Buckhorn Rd and go up to Pingree Park Rd to Poudre Canyon, just northwest of Kelly Flats.

Edit: If you stay on Buckhorn Rd, it takes you past Moody Hill. Have you run this? I never have.

Ted's or the King Sooper's at the north end of FoCo - either is good.

    King Sooper's north FoCo (fuel)

8.6 miles between the two - fuel concerns

    Ted's Place (fuel)

25.3 miles Ted's Place to Kelly Flats Eastern trailhead

I'll be a yes for Friday. Any time you wish is good by me. Gretchen (or anyone else) - interested???

Depending upon time, you might wish to add Old Flowers Road on the way back.

Old Flowers - BETWEEN Stove Prairie Road and Pingree Park Road
    FS 152
    Open
    6/15 -11/30

It'd be fun watching the buggy making short work of the chutes - up, down and all around.

I was considering coming home via one of those routes as its closer to the western end of the trail (I think). Never run Moody or Old Flowers....some number of years ago we did Sevenmile and Bald Mt, pretty much the only jeep trails I've run in the area.

Jim (and Michael) - would a 9am meet at Teds place work? There is some flexibility, but early always works for me, and if I am on the road around here before 7, I should avoid most of the downtown morning I-25 rush hour. By the time I fill up, grab a cup of coffee, etc, It might be more like 9:30 when we head up poudre canyon if those extra few minutes help you out. But 9 sharp also works as I'll just leave at 6:30 - I am trying not to absolutely hammer the old jeep at high speeds as much these days - the D18 and Warn OD growl is slowly getting louder (as expected), but its just the slow progression to the next rebuild....ahhh, the good ol days when 1940s components had to be rebuilt every 50k - which is more like 30k with todays cheap, low quality offshore replacement parts.

Any time or location is fine by me.

Old Flowers is open. I believe Moody is closed (listed as open to foot traffic only). County Road 44H should be open (parallels Old Flowers).

Going to (or from) Kelly Flats via Masonville is a nice ride. There is fuel at far west Loveland (here). There is "maybe gas" at Masonville (they put in a pump but I don't think it's credit card / the store needs to be open).

If you wish to travel via Masonville TO kelly flats, I'll met you at Masonville, here.

IF you wished to get off of I-25 and take slower roads to Masonville, you could consider getting off 25 at CO-66.

I can meet any time/place. I just need to confirm nothing important is going on at work Friday and I'll be in.
