Default Red Elephant Hill, Mill Creek, Bill Moore Lake - 10/16

Missed last week's. Been wanting to do some harder stuff with the TJ, have yet to find something it can't do. Who's in?

    Meet Time: 9am
Location: 39°45'51.6"N 105°38'11.6"W (the dirt pullout next to the road)
    Trail info: https://www.trailsoffroad.com/trails...-elephant-hill
Radio Channel: GMRS 16 (we'll do a radio check at the start to make sure we're not on a crowded channel)
Plan: Cruise up the main trail up, do the Mill Creek "loop", then down through Bill Moore Lake (adding on the extra legs if we want. yes.)

I have a full kit of recovery gear and a functional winch if anyone gets stuck.

if it isn't wet, snowy and soupy, I am probably in. Red Elephant is really tough when wet.

If the group is big, we've had success meeting here before. lots of room to meet and air down - https://www.google.com/maps/place/St...b2ZmZWVfc2hvcA

    Your location is good too.

    I just changed to 'yes'.

I see your run option as weather permitting.

Looks like they're getting some precip today but should clear up tomorrow and be relatively warm on Saturday.

I'll toss in the tire chains - just to ensure they won't be needed.

Red Elephant is almost entirely in the shade so there will likely still be snow.

I agree, I set my response to "No" after the snow this week. Could barely make it up that trail when it was just wet without snow or ice.

Did you get snow at your place?

FoCo had but five "barely" snowflakes in the little precip we received yesterday.

If Schmitty wishes to cancel - his call / I'm good either way.

We got a good amount of pea-sized hail a couple nights ago. Covered the ground and cars in a solid layer. Looks like Downieville area has between 1-2" from the last 14 days per NWS. Don't cancel because I don't want to go -- I just don't want to slide into any trees or spend all day winching.

Haven’t done Red Elephant. Have done the rest. The first time about 1980-81.

has anyone ran this trail that can verify how necessary full skids/rock rails are? That actually may determine if I go, not trying to destroy my TJ or rip a hole in the oil pan. For reference I only have stock skids

I did it in my LR4 in the wet. Had to winch in one spot. Did it in my G Wagen on 35s no issues. It’s a trail that benefits from articulation or lockers but not one that beats your rig up.

Shane, do you plan on going? Since our last run I've installed a front locker and OBA so I'm slightly better equipped than previously....minus rock sliders and skids

Been busy today. I'm still in and a little inclement weather... I seek the adversity so let's do it. @hugh welcome. I'll make sure to bring a heavier coat so I'm not freezing all day like when we did the Rainbow Falls anniversary run.
