Not sure what provoked this but I wonder what the chances are that it will stop with the Delicas.

Wow that is ridiculous, I would be so furious if I were an owner in Maine
You could change Delica to YJ Wrangler in that article, and aside from RHD they could go after those too. I can see ending new registrations, but why hurt existing people that followed the law when they got it? Maine should atleast offer fair market value for them.
Can you imagine being less fortunate there, maybe an old Delica is your work van, and all of a sudden the government says your van isn't a van and you can't drive it anymore? Not everybody can just run out and buy a new van, especially right now...
Governments CANNOT be allowed to devalue someone's personal property without offering compensation.

RHD?? Almost all vehicles used for rural route mail delivery are RHD (many are Jeeps).
I don’t think the law would stand up in court regarding currently registered vehicles. It seems capricious to cancel the registrations of vehicles already in use for decades legally unless the state can show that they have an unusually dangerous safety record. As for lacking pollution controls, it seems arbitrary unless they deregister all other vehicles that don’t have controls, such as all pre-mid 1960’s vehicles.
It seems capricious indeed, that's actually why I posted it. I'm not one normally to post up every story like this I see but this one was so odd, and unexpected that I'm hoping someday the root cause that kicked all of this off gets out and someone updates the thread with it because I am super curious what happened behind the scenes to get to the point they started sending letters out. Feels like there must be some inside story but I can't even hazard a guess as to what it would be.
It could be as simple as a poorly written law that has unintended consequences when enforced, and it wouldn't be the first time that has happened.
