    Default Summitville / Platoro Reservoir

Since the Wheeler run went bust we met up for Summitville and Platoro Reservoir instead. Nice day, good company, interesting places. I wouldn't recommend either as a destination, but if you're in the area they're nice and worth seeing. Summitville road from Del Norte itself is not worth doing, it's all gravel and some pavement with a little dirt near Summitville. Great views, that is true of the whole area. Park Creek road / 380 is beautiful, we went to Summitville that way. There are some other roads back towards the South Fork area that I'd try instead. The road from Summitville to Platoro Reservoir is long, 2wd and bumpy, but on the plus side we got to do it twice. The reservoir was a nice lunch stop, and we made it out of the forest just as a light rain started.

We had a great time despite it not being the original plan and I'm glad you posted this trip on the forum. We camped up at Hanson's Mill Dispersed campground which was very interesting - it's 10 miles up the road to wheeler - and right before where they have the gate closed. It was free, and called dispersed camping, but there was a vault toilet, metal fire rings with grill grates, and picnic tables. It was a great place to camp.
And, we really enjoyed the drives with Paul and his wife. Pretty scenery, nice easy roads, but way more gravel/rocks than I've ever done before, so it was still good practice for me. The following two pics are Bucky the Trucky at the campsite and some rocks my daughter took a picture of on the way to the campsite.
