Default Pickle Gulch / Yankee Hill Sat June 19 Trail Run Report

Everyone that signed up arrived on time. That made, I believe 13 vehicles. We broke into two groups, faster and slower. I led the slower group. We took the scree hill South side of Pickle Gulch and left 5 minutes after the first group. Some of the longer wheelbase vehicles struggled just a bit on some of the whoop-ti-doos on the steeper sections, but all made it through. Met up with the faster group at Apex, and headed toward Miners Gulch.

The first real obstacle on Miners had many of my group deciding it was over their vehicles capabilities so we took the spur over to Kingston Peak trail and headed back down to Tolland and Rollinsville. Aired up and headed home. I arrived home a bit after 4pm.

No pictures for me. I am certain others have a few.

I have pictures tended. Video is in process - later today. Video is of Trent, Shane, Gerald working through the obstacle on Miner's Gulch.

Miner's Gulch took me to task. I made poor route choices. Lockers couldn't save my soul. James and Trent offered the guidance to get me through the two tough spots.

I ended up with the smaller group so only have handful of people's rigs in my pictures. I had more than imgur will let me upload in a single post so I broke them into two sets.

    Pics of people wheeling: https://imgur.com/a/rGemS5R

Stuff I saw off the trail during the day: https://imgur.com/a/Vzfj5dV

The obstacle that turned most of the group back was a real challenge. I was behind James, Jim and Trent who all had various struggles with it which gave me time to find another line as I realized there was no way I was going to make any of the lines they took. Found a good line and with some great spotting by James was able to get through, with Trent able to take the same line as well. Gerald just made his own line, it was fun to watch but I did something wrong with the camera because I didn't end up getting any pics of it. Once we got to the top of Yankee Hill James and Jim split off to head out, Trent, Gerald and I kept going back down Yankee Hill to Columbine camp ground where Gerald and Trent aired up and headed home. I kept going and found a few new things in the Dakota Hill area on the way home plus some challenging scree climbs. Great day all in all, no breakages (at least in my group) and enough challenge to make it interesting.

We had power steering go out in one of the full size. They headed home when we hit apex.

First run I've been on this year, had a lot of fun, it was good to get up into the mountains again after the nonsense of the last year.

Only took a couple of pics,

Great day out! It was nice seeing old faces and meeting some New ones. Pickle gulch was a new and fun trail for me. The lead into the first major obstacle on miners gulch was fun. As far as the 1st obstacle it seemed a bit to much for me at moment. Not a single picture taken by me See you all on the next run.

I love that Gerald just went right over that huge rock. That rig is so fun to watch.

I felt very tippy on that obstacle. James kindly offered to stand on the sliders to try to keep the jeep upright, but I decided to bail on that line pretty quickly at that point. It actually looks as tippy as it felt!

    awesome videos Jim, well done!

wish we could have stuck around to watch every one get through but people wanted to get turned around and out of there. hope i can give that a try in the future with my rig, maybe after i get some real rock sliders

Was a fun run, glad I got to meet another full size truck member out there and happy to report not only did i not break anything i think the MAF sensor i put in last week was the fix to my repeated "too lean" check engine light that has been coming on after every trip to the mountains

First run of the season for me and Pickle Gulch was a great pick! I found it to be quite different than it was last year. Not necessarily more difficult, but it was more rutted out. I was glad that my daughter took the wheel for a while and I could see that she retained so much of what I taught her last year on much easier trails. She throw in the towel when we reached the obstacle with the two opposing holes to navigate. (I didn't blame her. That was a tricky one)!

It was great to see such a big group together again and to meet some new people! See ya next time!

I was sitting right behind you gripping my wheel tightly every time you rocked to the right side Trent, at one point I thought you were about to go over. Was spooky to watch even.

Yeah was this right before James stood on the rock sliders? Looked bad from my angle

Yep. I took my time scouting a different line after seeing that, figured in my rig it would have been a flop.

I think I lost a rear sway bar end link bushing on the trail. I noticed a weird metallic rattling during the trail run, but didn't see anything missing in my quick check on the trail. Today I looked more closely and found a bushing missing on passenger rear sway bar end link, on the lower portion of the link. All of my bushings on that sway bar look pretty dry and cracked, so a replacement set is in the mail. If this happens to anyone else, the local auto stores carry a universal shock bushing that looks like it will fit. I'm going to put that in to keep going for this week until the full bushing set arrives in the mail.

fwiw: steering angle sensor for my EPS failed. not a "serviceable" part, so needs new steering gear and to be reprogrammed by Ford. truck has 11k miles on it. 2700 bucks to repair.

makes me miss the days before everything was computer-controlled and sensor-dependent in vehicles.

It's a 2017, so outside the 3 yr new vehicle limited warranty period that would cover such a part. Such is life. Time for a toy offroad vehicle (not that this sensor failure had anything to do with offroading).
