I ordered a pack of orange marker flags on 15" sticks that came in today. Y'all are welcome to each have one, I plan to tape one onto an antenna once we get to the dunes.

No idea about the fire situation, I plan to come prepared for whichever scenario - I'd think there would be signs indicating if there's a fire ban.

I'm leaning towards taking my Exploder out for this run instead of the Jimny, that way I can hoon it out on the dunes without as much worry about breaking something.

We're planning to drive the Jimny away from our wedding next month and getting parts from Japan can take a while, so I'm being more careful with it.

My Explorer was made back when they were more off-road capable, at least. In case I do take it, just look for the shitbox 2-door with mismatched body panels and way too many yellow light-bars.

Before the exposé stories about Explorers rolling over frequently and being death traps, you mean?

Oh no, it was definitely made during that time.

My Jimny is a second gen from back when they were reputed for the same (The Samurai), so I guess I just like to live dangerously

Very sorry to bail last minute but while doing last minute checks on my rig I found a coolant leak. Won't have time to fix it and still make the trip unfortunately.

I bet the range Rover would be fine.

I'm bringing a friend in a Tacoma for the day. I still plan to camp but I think my friend is just day tripping today. Mark, I'll be in the rig in the profile photo but I have a very distinctive body colored hard top now. I assume you are still in and I'll see you there around 2pm?

"There is some great dispersed camping around the whole area, and the farther from the main areas you go the better it gets."

We went up the trail north of the dunes a ways but didn't find any dispersed camping. Maybe we didn't go far enough. Gave up looking due to the absurd swarms of mosquitoes. This must be the weekend they all hatched, because even the restaurant we ate at in Walden proper was swarming with mosquitoes on this trip.

    Paul previously posted:
"The pit toilets are near areas you can get large trucks / trailers / RVs to so the ATV crowd uses them alot, especially on the weekends. They tend to be loud and lit up at night, and in my experience the pit toilets are gross."

We were 50/50 on this one. Two of the pit toilets were normal pit-toilet level -- reasonably clean and usable. The third one we stopped at was notably and memorably bad.

    Paul previously posted:
"If you keep going north by the creek or just away from the established sites it gets quieter."

It was quieter on the southern side of the area, but we encountered endless swarms of mosquitoes everywhere, all day long. I probably would have camped on the southern portion away from the ATVs and been fine with noise / crowds that way but for the bugs. Jim noted that yesterday was "not busy at all" compared to the last time he camped there, while I thought the place was fairly overrun with ATVs, quads, and side-by-sides.

It sounds like you had a rough time, that sucks. I've only been there once on a weekend and it was a zoo, you can see a lot of that on youtube. I usually don't do much on weekends at all, everywhere is too crowded now. I take 3 to 5 weekdays in a row off each month for stuff like this so the last two times I was there it was almost empty. I didn't know there was a restaurant in Walden. I like that town, it looks like a movie from the 70s.

I'm surprised you had any trouble finding a place to camp, although the bugs would be a deal breaker for me too. The whole dunes area and beyond is dispersed camping; in the video below the drone turns north away from the dunes at around :35 and everything white you see on the ground is a camper. You can see along the roads there are pulloffs, you can camp literally anywhere. If you look at the Funtreks North colorado book the second trail is the back way to the dunes, that is through national forest and state forest state park to Holnholz Lakes and the trails by Government creek connect with it. There is even a creek called Camp Creek. That area is wonderful and you can find the Old Roach townsite and logflume (second video).
