Default Getting strapped is no fun!

The Jeep overheated on 119 on my way to work this past Saturday. I pulled over. waited until it cooled and coasted back down hill into a gas station I had just passed. Coolant tank was empty, so I bought some, filled it up and gave it another go. That didn't work! I turned around and started limping it back toward home stopping every half mile or so. I didn't get very far before I called my husband to come to my rescue. I had my tow strap and we managed to get it to Tim's Garage in Evergreen. So 119 to 6 to 40 to 74. Not fun!

I rented a zippy little Mitsubishi hot wheels matchbox car to get me through the week. (It was cheep and got me from point A to point B)!

Ended up with a new radiator, thermostat and coolant tank. Today I'll take the Jeep for a test ride down the hill. Hope all goes well.

The word "terrifying" comes to mind.

Today I drove it down to Discount Tire to have the tires rotated and balanced. They pulled a nail out of one of them and plugged it for me. The guy helping me talked me out of rotating them. He said it wouldn't make much of a difference because they are evenly "worn out". He said he would not count on them to make it through the summer... Bummer. I had a feeling they would say something like that because they have nearly 48,000 miles on them and are 5 yrs. old.

So now I have to shop for tires. Advise welcome!!!

I loved the original BFG Mud Tires that came with it new in 2008. The KO2s I have now were great off road but noisy on the road and crappy in slushy conditions in comparison. I'm open to your suggestions! I drive almost 50 miles a day for work now so something a little more comfortable on the pavement would be nice if I don't have to sacrifice the off road capability too much.

i love my Cooper Discoverer ATPs. They are quiet on the road, and do real well on snowy roads. Have had no issues off road either. Have 50k on em and they will get me through the summer. Great price too. Only issue is they are no longer being made. I believe they are now selling the Cooper Discoverer ATP II (60k warranty).

I plan on buying Coopers again next time and will likely get the ATP II, but also considering the evolution mt.

Falken Wildpeak AT3W are a good alternative to KO2's that are a little better in the snow and on the road, not quite as good offroad but in the same general category as the KO2.

Look for some Rubicon ATs takeoffs. They can be found pretty inexpensive with low mileage.

I'd rather buy new ones even though it hurts the wallet. I'm kinda liking the Cooper tires that Tom is recommending. I need to call the guy at Discount Tire that helped me. He was trying to get me to consider a set of tires that he had on sale because they were discontinued. I think they were the same ones but I want to make sure.

I'll toss another vote in the bin for the Falken AT3Ws. Great tire.

Jackie, I think it's odd that you think the all terrain tires are louder than the mud terrain tires. Did you write that backwards?

I would stay away from tires that are being discontinued. If you have an issue with one your going to be looking at buying a whole new set of tires.

Good point. You can buy a “warranty” from discount. I wonder how they would handle that situation.

No mistake max! I was working from home back in my mud tire days so I mostly drove the Jeep off-road. Noise didn't bother me on my short trips to pick up the kids or run errands. Now I drive 50 miles per day for work. It doesn't bother me that much which is why I still want something good in winter weather as well as off-road.

That's exactly what the sales guy said when I called him yesterday. Good point. I'm still shopping.

The ATM is not available in my tire size. I'd need new wheels. (No go). What do you think of the Dynapro AT2 RF11 tires?

I have the AT3Ws on our Xterra and I recommend them as well. I looked at the new Dynapro when I got them, they looked great too, I just didn't go that way. They are very similar to the old one, the biggest visual change is the center section of the tread. Before the AT3Ws we had the RF10s and they were great on and offroad. I don't think either is a bad choice.

I do not have any experience with those but I'd assume they are a good tire.
