Default Looking for Suggestions - 12 Jun 21

My dad just bought a JT Rubicon and will be visiting in June. He's never been off roading before but wants to get out there, most likely will be Jun 12 (probably Jun 14 as well). Looking for trail suggestions that a beginner in a highly capable Jeep could do. He's definitely no slouch behind the wheel, just hasn't been 4 wheelin. Hitting multiple trails in one area for a full day of fun would be ideal. Once I get some suggestions I'll post up some planned runs. Thanks!

Yankee Hill and Pickle Gulch can keep one busy for a day. Many other trails won't be open yet. T33-A might be open.

Kingston Peak, if it's open by then. Fourmile is perfect for beginners, there are a lot of options and the scenery is incredible.

I think 68J (county road above flagstaff in boulder) and west magnolia would be good. I think West Mag opens on May 15 so it should be good by june. These trails are easy to moderate but any stock vehicle should have no problem. That said, these trails do not feel like driving on dirt roads; there a a few places I am happy to have low range.

I would be happy to lead a run like this. June 11 would be better (not the weekend), but I could do June 12 too.

That's unfortunate, I figured it would open sooner.

Then Pierson Park isn't open either. Pole Hill would be though.

Thank you all for the suggestions! We've revised our plan so we will be riding both Fri, Jun 11 and Sun, Jun 13. Friday we want to stay more up north as we have a dinner in Broomfield, so I think Pole Hill is a great option. I think we will want a follow on trail after that, when we ran Pole Hill last time it only took up 2.5-3 hrs. Maybe hit a section of Switzerland as we make our way south after Pole Hill? Or something else up that way more interesting?

Sunday I think we will mix it up and go farther south. Either Yankee/Kingston with possible addition of Pickle Gulch OR doing Schubarth again. I'll have to see how much my dad likes getting jostled around as Yankee/Kingston is MUCH rockier than Schubarth. I'll make a decision and get these posted up in Planned Runs

    Miller Rock? Johnny Park?

    Want any company?

I would not expect Kingston Peak to be open that early in the season.

Miller Rock, I believe, is open all year - snow depending. You folks would not have to go down the sketchy obstacle to cross the creek (if you didn't want to). You could stay on the western side of the creek (and do the easy scramble to the top of Miller Rock). T-33a, if open, can be a nice stop. Those are up near Pole Hill. You can spend time at Storm Mountain too (if you wished to stay Pole Hill & north) - if open.

It seems Matt and I are typing at the same time!

Too bad I won't be able to join you, but Miller Rock would be a good one. You could avoid the hardest spur although you could definitely make it if you did it (I have a video of the gold Rubi doing it). Your dads truck could also but it's pretty darn intimidating for a newbie, I wouldn't recommend it. The rest of Miller rock would be great though and a good add on if you did Pole hill earlier in the day (you could make Miller rock a 2-3 hour run also).

I would definitely recommend the far northern section of Switzerland trail starting at Sawmill road and running Cliffhanger 2.0 if it's not too snowy still, and I doubt it would be by mid-June....... I saw a mountain lion on that trail a few summers ago. Then you could continue down Switzerland trail and exit down towards Boulder from that easy but scenic trail.

I have not been to Pole Hill before, but if it is #122 it will probably not be open according to the MVUM https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE...rdb5165761.pdf . It will open on 6/15. June 15 is a big opening day for seasonal trails. Switzerland trail, bunce and miller rock are year round.

I believe Pole Hill usually opens a bit earlier than some of the other trails in the area due to the fact of commercial tours from RMNP visitors. I can likely run up that way next weekend and see.

IDK if it's too far south, but Badger Flats is fun and easy and getting there is beautiful no matter how you do it. I was there a week ago, it does not have seasonal closures that I'm aware of, no closed gates that I saw.

Jim and I met up at Pole Hill this AM and found the gate locked. It still could be open by June 12. The link below should be watched to see.

Not sure if you answered, but are you looking for company on either day?

Will also echo ohers about Miller Rock and add, the easy side is fun and nice, the other side is a bit sketchy if you are at all nervous around edges (AND THE WHOLE PLUMMETING TO YOUR DEATH THING.. YEAH I'M SCARED OF HEIGHTS, WHY DO YOU ASK?)
