Swing away tire carrier parts
Just on the internet chasing some other stuff down and looked at

Not only do they have the nice swing away bearing hinge parts, but they also have a nice assortment of VERY CHEAP builder parts and tabs for all sorts of applications.
Don't remember who was looking for the swing away tire bearing/hinge/pin, but it's here. Rock Logic has it for $45 which is pretty cheap considering what you get.

Brody: are those the fab tabs (under the heading Fabrication Tabs) you were talking about when we were discussing mounting a gas can holder to my ladder rack?

i was using that same set up until i saw the iron pig off road spindle.
IPORs spindle is rated at 2k
the other is 1k
IPORs spindle is sooooo much more spindle for almost the same price.

What in the world is IPOR? Is there a website? What is it? Other folks might want to know...

Not specifically, no. These are more basic builder weld on tabs. Where you are with your gas tank set up, you can do most anything. I'll get with you on that pretty soon.

Iron Pig's are very strong, ask Jim (SROR) as he's shown me one he used for a very heavy duty swing arm he made a while back.

I like that IPOR spindle, very nice, but their compression latch is STEEP! sheesh.

yea, Im diggin up an (very) old thread lol..
I have a swingout tire carrier on my 4runner but Im looking to add a gas strut as the locking pin is toast lol. Ive seen a few in the past that use a gas strut to assist in opening the carrier but cant seem to find any now, Im trying to figure out the size to strength of strut to get.
Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Mine (Tactical 4x4 swing out) was a hood strut from a Nissan Maxima.

As for figuring out the strength... Figure out where you would want to mount it roughly. If you can get a hold of a fish-scale or something similar, then park at something close to the worst case angle you might typically park at that would want to make the carrier swing shut then see how much force it takes to hold the carrier open where you want it. Keep in mind you would want to pull in a direction similar to the angle the strut would point relative to carrier. I would then add 10-20% to that figure. That's how I would do it.
