You can buy one anywhere that sells fishing and hunting licenses. Although the seller may not be familiar with the process.

    Jim previously posted:
    "My belief
    1) If it's a Forest Service "road" - no permit needed for my Colorado plated street vehicle
    2) If it's some sort of "trail" - a permit _might_ (or not) be needed.

In my time here in Colorado, I rarely visit "trails" that I think need a permit and thus rarely buy a permit. When I do, I visit the local sporting goods store where they have the permits in stock (in/out in 10 minutes)."

    Paul previously posted:
"It seems the areas you need the sticker for are changing every year, and if I'm reading the description from Rainbow Falls correctly I think you might need a sticker to use any roads or trails that are on a MVUM, or just for what is considered an OHV trail, which for an OHV is anything on the map but for a plated vehicle it's just what is considered an OHV trail. wtf... I'm just buying the sticker and forgetting about it.

    From this page https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/psic...27704&actid=93

"Free Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) are available at your local Forest Service Ranger District office. Please pick up a MVUM before you head out. These maps identify the Forest Service roads and designated motorized trails, that are open to Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) use. All resident owned OHVs being operated on Forest Service system roads and trails, are required to have a valid Colorado OHV Registration. If the OHV is from another state, a Colorado OHV Use Permit is required. For motor vehicles with a valid state license plate being operating on designated OHV trails, a Colorado OHV Use Permit is also required.""

This is the best list I have seen that details which "trails" require the permit on plated vehicles.

I'm not excited about the snow and mud so I'll probably skip it. I'd be up for rescheduling.

I was looking at this... but the fare-weather wheeler in me is thinking I'm out. Would be interested in a reschedule though.

I went to the CPW office at Boyd Lake in Loveland today and talked to a CPW officer about when and where an OHV permit is required.
Here is a summary of what she said:

    1. Any vehicle operating off road on public land must have a current OHV permit, including forest service roads and OHV trails.
    2. If the vehicle is already plated (registered) by Colorado DMV then it does not need to be registered again with CPW.
    3. CPW will send a reminder to renew if the vehicle is registered with them. So no reminder for most of us here using plated vehicles.

For those like me who couldn't find the OHV permits on the CPW shopping page: A buddy noted that if you click on the "Land & Trails" icon (upper left) it will display the permits to buy.

I bought my OHV permit while at the office.

I'm confused (and this is the core of the whole sticker issue). I take number two to mean - you don't need to buy one.

Registration with CPW is separate from having a permit/sticker. All vehicles need a permit/sticker but only those not plated with DMV need to be registered with CPW.

In other words, whether a Jeep, pickup truck, or ATV, all require a sticker to be purchased every year. But only the ATV needs to be registered with CPW, assuming itís not plated which I would think most arenít. An uncommon case would be an unplated Jeep that is used strictly off road and trailered in, in which case it would need to be registered with CPW and have a sticker.

Again, going by what the officer told me today.

I don't know if it has changed, but with my dirt bike it was a one time registration on the atv, dirt bike, or razor was to register and get it titled in my name. Then it was a yearly OHV fee to be legal. They had to do a initial inspection of the bike to make sure it was within the standards for forest roads. (If you buy it used you can have the bike inspected, new the shop can issue the sticker) But now a days we are taxed, taxed, and then taxed again for just about every dollar you earn. Got my sticker yesterday.

I'm gonna waffle and stay home too.

A couple more inches of snow last night, not a big deal since the trail is mild.

Gonna hold out for some doors off weather for my next run.

    Have a great time fellas!
