Default RVer flat-tows new Jeep Wrangler in low gear; carnage ensues

"...the driver made the critical mistake of leaving the Wrangler in gear. First gear. With the transfer case in 4-low."

It's impressive that the transfer case and trans held together and didn't grenade before the engine went. The engine was the last item in the driveline - everything else (ujoints, xfer case chain, trans gears) held.

I wonder how the I6 would have fared in comparison. I am not volunteering mine for the experiment!

The trans probably has more damage than the bellhousing and input shaft. The t-case (slowest rotating of the pieces) may be fine.

I did a calculation based on the factory manual trans, a 4:1 tcase, 4.10 gears, and stock tires.

At 60 MPH, that would have been turning 53,404 RPM. I'm sure it let go long before they got up to 60. No mass produced car/truck engine can handle that.

If you can't fix it with a hammer or duct tape you have an electrical problem

In 4-low, I believe the bearing surfaces of the planetary gears might be something to inspect. I believe there's a speed limitation on'm (insufficient lubrication at higher rev's).
