    Default LJ Muffler

It's nice to have a limited run Jeep until you get to unique parts. My muffler is shot and sounds like I'm getting a UPS delivery from 1995. I don't want to use a loud cat-back to replace it so I looked for an OEM replacement. An OEM muffler for an LJ is only made by MOPAR now, it comes with a tailpipe and the best price I found is a nucking futs $314.88 plus tax and shipping https://www.moparpartsgiant.com/part...6052347aa.html

The body is 27.5" long with an offset exhaust, so I ordered this one from amazon with a 28" body and similar pipes for $56.78 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1
oddly for another discontinued vehicle, a Pontiac Montana V6.

    along with two 3" x 2.25" clamps https://www.amazon.com/EVIL-ENERGY-E...NsaWNrPXRydWU=

and some 12" sawzall blades to cut the old muffler off leaving the bolt on flange in place. Theoretically anyway, I'll post up how it actually goes when it gets here. The part I don't understand is why they didn't use the same muffler as a TJ 4.0 with a longer tailpipe instead of the same tailpipe with a longer muffler. I considered doing that myself, but I don't want to deal with removing the 14 year old bolts on the flanged front pipe of the muffler, so since I'm committed to cutting anyway this seems easier and should give me a quieter muffler.

If that muffler doesn't work out, this is the one I went with three years ago. It bolts right to the CAT but is slightly shorter than the OEM muffler. The sound level is nursing home approved.

I'm actually returning that same muffler today, amazon said it fit my jeep but it's for a TJ. It's about 10" shorter than the OEM muffler, which is no big deal. the reason I'm not using it is to disconnect the two bolts on the flange I'd have to drop the transfercase skid, and the captured nuts are too much of a potential can of worms for me right now. That muffler has a maybe 3" pipe between the body and the flange, the OEM LJ one has about a 6" pipe. It wouldn't matter in use (as you know!) but it does give me an alternative for removal: there is just enough room between the skid and the body of the muffler to get a sawblade in, so I'm going to leave the flange in place and just cut it, hopefully.

So that muffler has an offset inlet and centered outlet, exactly wrong and it's not reverseable according to the manufacturer so it's going back. Wish they had specified in / out on the listing, but no big deal. I've decided to go with a Thrush Hush https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1, a short extension pipe and a 12" sawzall blade. Should be pretty quick if the cuts go well.

    That's a great price too.
