Default Jeep Jamboree replacing CB with GMRS for 2021

It seems like I've had a lot of discussions with folks here this year about CB and GMRS. All of the GMRS fans will be pleased to see Jeep Jamboree is moving to GMRS as the sanctioned communication system for 2021 and beyond.

I'm sure this had a lot to do with it:

"Midland Radio Corporation is the official 2020 communications sponsor of Jeep® Jamboree USA."

But realistically, there are a lot of drawbacks to CB radios on the trail. They're pretty simple devices but the antennas need care and feeding that a lot of people don't do. So there's always a couple people in the group that have trouble communicating.

I suspect the transition from CB to FRS/GMRS as the main type of trail comms will happen over time. I'm actually starting to plan having 3 radios in my trail rig. CB, ham, and GMRS. That way I can communicate with everyone.

I would be interested in such a set-up....need to learn a bit more about them....like whether a handheld unit (possibly powered or recharged by a 12V cord) would be sufficient.

Absolutely -- it's an uphill climb to convince everyone who already has a CB that they are content with to go buy another radio, particularly when GMRS FCC license requires a small fee. I've considered buying a set of handhelds a few times, but never have done so.

I actually just pulled the trigger and applied for my GMRS license. I'll most likely get a higher power capable base station in my Jeep (like the Midland 40w radio) but I'm probably going to get a handheld to start.

I think there are a number of handhelds that are allowed to operate under the license exception noted here (https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/bureau-...io-service-frs). It is a little difficult to find transmit power for many radios on the market. I think the Moto T600 (https://fccid.io/AZ489FT4924) complies with this exception and I've ordered a couple to play with. Interestingly, the user guide (https://www.motorolasolutions.com/co...erGuide_EN.pdf) shipping with these units indicates a license is required, but I suspect that is because it was written in 2016 and the FCC license exception was published in the fall of 2017.

Anyone with more experience on these bands care to provide some additional insight or context?

I ordered these on Amazon today. Same day delivery (with amazon prime) at no charge, so I should have them tonight to try out tomorrow. Same price, too.

Edit: The product page now tells me Sunday is earliest delivery if I wanted to order more. I guess all the inventory from the local warehouse is spoken for. If that was my doing, sorry!

Just an fyi for anyone thinking GMRS. It requires a license to the tune of $70 every 10 years. FRS is legal for anyone, no license. Some frs channels overlap with gmrs. The difference being frs is limited to .5 watts power while gmrs is allowed up to 50 watts.

I still say ham can be cheaper then gmrs: no license fee, exams can be had for free, and study materials can be had for free. Power levels can be way higher than 50 watts but most people don’t use over that when mobile.

I just won one of these. Programmable to ham, business, gmrs, and frs. Looks like a really nice radio. Set it up for frs and gmrs freqs.

I chose the Moto T600 because it charges via micro-USB. I wanted something I could easily charge in the Jeep. The Midland GXT1000 seems to be really popular and priced the same, but looks like a pain to charge with TRS connector or having to use their charging base that is designed to sit on a shelf at your house.

Both the Midland and Moto can use alkaline AA batteries, I believe.

Apparently there is an exception for radios previously marketed as FRS/GMRS combination radios that transmit less than 2W on the GMRS frequencies and do not access certain frequencies (see my link above). Newer FRS or GMRS radios are supposed to be marketed as only one or the other and these new GMRS radios definitely do require a license as they typically exceed 2W. This seems to be a confusing nuance on GMRS licensing. I'd guess for most of our use with a small group that FRS at 0.5W is enough power anyway, since we'll often be very close together.

I have two of these. They are frs/gmrs units that I no longer use. They are older but still working fine. The only isssue is that both of their recharge ports broke and one can no longer charge them with the batteries installed. One must remove the four aaa batteries and put them in a standard charger to charge. Only one set of instructions and only one original charger.

    if someone wants them...

Then it is a new exception because previously they did require a license. I had to get for when I bought the cobra radios I posted elsewhere in this thread.

Yes, exactly. This exception was issued in 2017. I think it is unusual to own a newer radio that would fall under this exception. I believe that your comment about needing a GMRS license is generally accurate and certainly the safe and responsible course if someone doesn't know their radio meets the requirements of the exception. I thought it was interesting that there were moderately powerful radios that can be used unlicensed on GMRS channels so I was trying to point that out.

One can get the Baofeng UV5R for around $25. It can easily be programmed for frs/gmrs. It has enough memory that one can also program in various vhf/uhf ham repeaters for use in an emergency situation. Two power levels. I believe 2 and 5 watts. Settable for each frequency.

These are not technically legal for use as ham, or frs/gmrs, simply because you can program them for both at the same time. But they are sold everywhere and used by many without issues. I have three of them.

    https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-UV-5R...7110982&sr=8-3

I use one with a 40 watt amplifier for my aprs.

I was going to look up the transmit power of these based on the model number, but it looks like the XRS 9370 might be a radar detector and not a radio. Is that the correct manual and part number for these?

This sounds quite similar to the "ultralight" crowd. FAA Subpart 103 clarifies no more than 5 gallons of fuel, no more than 254 pounds of weight but there are scant few "ultralights" that are compliant - and nothing happens (not that I call for anything to happen).

I think it's more A) so long as everyone 'plays nice' / isn't abusive and B) Gub-mint doesn't have $$ / persons to go after the offenders.

Those Baofeng radios are great if you take time to set them up. I didn't mention them because you can't buy one and immediately use it out of the box safely. They require programming to correct frequencies before use. If you take a new one and try to use it, it could be previously programmed to access channels in use by emergency services, for instance, and you could easily get yourself noticed in a bad way. As long as you program them properly, they can be responsibly used.
