Default SAT 10/3 - Day after HC - what trails?

Title says it - what trails do we wish to visit after Holy Cross on Friday 10/2?

The Tie Rod Bender thread seems to have played out so let's think about something here.

All-in for Tie Rod or is there more interest in something else? James has a couple in mind. I'm open to about anything.

I added to the TRB thread and suggested McAllister Gulch. Close to Holy Cross and is one of the trails James had in mind.

Unless anyone else has any suggestions Jim and I will be running McAllister Gulch on Saturday 10/3. If no one replies with any suggested trails in the vicinity of Holy Cross, I will post McAllister on the Calendar this evening.

Forest Service says as of 6/27/2020 - open with the status updated on 9/11/2020 - BUT there's a note that one can't get back to Red Cliff

I called the Minturn office number (970-827-5715) for clarification. While I didn't speak to a person, the automated road status indicates that McAllister Gulch does not connect with Shrine Pass (which, I assume we'd want to take to get to I-70 eastbound).

The north end of McAllister is open at Ptarmigin Pass / 747 Weary Creek to get back south to near the start of McAllister Gulch.

I'm game for anything - McAllister Gulch (about 2 hours) > Ptarmigan Pass (about 2 hours) loop (possibly adding Ptarmigan Road (in/out) to the mix), or Tie Rod Bender, or ???

    [QUOTE=open_circuit;339279]Is it open?
Thanks for the alert Trent. I contacted the Holy Cross Ranger District, McAllister Gulch Trail FRS 708 is open. The section that is closed is the spur that connects to Shrine Pass (red on the attached map). The Ranger stated that the loop is open.

The loop from McAllister Gulch to Ptarmigan Pass looks like a good run.

You guys are tempting me....A few winters ago, Jen and I did a winter ski tour up McCallister from 'Pando' on the map above. There is a 10th Mt hut on the north flank/ridge of Resolution M and we spent a few nights there skiing. Skiing on Mt Resolution was good (but its a bit avy prone). That was one helluva long day day getting up the the road with skis an skins through deep snowpack and it was snowing quite heavy. I've been interested to go back an check it out in the summer time.

As the loop is planned, unless something else (in addition to the loop) pops up, I might take the full Shrine Pass route back to I-70.

    Camp Hale to I-70/Copper Mountain

Via Red Cliff / Shrine Pass
    (google map)
    24 miles / 54 min

    Via Minturn
    (google map)
    41 miles / 52 min

    Via Leadville
    (google map)
    37 miles / 41 min

They're close enough in time that, should I have no fuel concern, the Shrine Pass route is one I have looked at before and would be nice to visit (I'd go solo if others wished diff routes).

Looks like a winner to me...! I'll bring an extra 5 gallons of fuel.

Closest fuel station is the Shell in Minturn (9 miles from Red Cliff). From that station, through the route for all of the trails and back to I-70 at Copper Mountain exist - 98 miles (Google map).

I'm good for 200/220 miles (highway) and think 120/150 would be reasonable for this trail mix. If I fill Thurs PM or Fri AM, I'd have no worry. I just called'm and they said 24-hour pay at the pump is available. I don't think I'll bring any extra.

"whenever" and I'll be there - but I'm not a morning person (so pref not 6am for a trailhead).

As for Holy Cross meet time - if you wanted to push it earlier, that's OK as I'm in Red Cliff Thursday night (oof - tomorrow night).

I'll keep Holy Cross meet up at 10A, give some room for travel time and now that we are in no hurry to get back home. Just need get to Mango's in time for dinner.
Sunrise Cafe is open at 7:00A. Let's meet there for breakfast at 8:00A and be at the trailhead by 9:30A, on the trail by 10:00A to allow travel time just in case anyone else wants to join in the fun. If its just you and me, we and adjust to whatever works.
    Posting now...
