    Default Hello from Denver

Hi everybody, my name is Steven and I just moved to Denver this past September. I was born and raised outside of Detroit and spent the previous 4 years in MA for work before moving here. Loving it so far and I've finally been able to realize my dream of owning a Wrangler. I scooped up a stock 1993 YJ in early June and have been giving it a lot of love (and there's a lot more to go...). I'm completely new to the off-roading scene and am looking to get my feet wet. Looking for some easy trails to start out on, and hopefully some veteran advice on Jeep maintenance/upgrades. So far, Youtube has been the mechanically-inclined father I never had Hope to be out there in the next couple weeks!

So _that's_ what a stock YJ should look like (it's been a while)!

If you have the schedule flexibility for tomorrow, Tom and I are visiting some "up north" trails - Old Flowers Road (and perhaps one or two others, TBD). Old Flowers Road (and any other we'd visit) is an easy trail. We'd welcome another, if you can swing the schedule.

4cyl or 4.0 6cyl? Looks like a nice jeep with lots of potential. Lots of aftermarket support for YJs and fairly cheap to build up just a bit.

Upon further review... Who is catching the "not-stock" item in his picture?

It's perhaps the first thing to get ditched on the YJ's...

Thanks Jim and Tom, I wish I could have made it! YJ is actually in the shop getting a whole new LuK clutch kit in. I wanted to do the job myself, but I live in an apartment (not by choice, I'm engaged...) so the maintenance I can do is limited without taking up a friend's garage/renting a trans jack. I *have* been able to do an oil change, trans fluid change, brakes/rotors, rear diff fluid change, transfer case fluid change, install a radio, and a few other little projects, so I figured one trip to the transmission shop isn't bad.

It's a 4cyl with the 5 speed and 179k miles. I bought it off an older lady who had it for 25 years. She took very good care of it over the course of it's life, although it was pretty neglected for the past 4 years as she had gotten a new car (one with a/c...)

That would make sense as the running boards are all jacked up/not connected properly and have cracks as a result. I'm 6'3", I think I might just ditch them

I went looking - this morning even - at "stock 1993 wranger" pix - those runnnig boards are shown on many 93's. They might be stock?? My comment was to the front bumper - the ends by the tires - had plastic ends that some called "milk jugs". They were black in color. They bolted on and it seems they were the first thing to be removed.

I understand the limitations for maint when you don't have a garage. Some day that'll change.

Here is what I thought all the YJ side steps looked like -similar to the OPs but not quite the same - at least on my 1990 this is what they looked like. I do remember the plastic jugs although I thought they were more common on TJ wranglers as they were part of the energy absorbing, crash test requirements....Honestly, I would guess the OPs jeep originally came without any side-steps and someone added some aftermarket ones at some time. The base model YJ with 4cyl, 5speed would have had very little in the way of dress up trim items etc...it always looked a bit odd with the front fender flare extending towards the rocker a few inches and then just ending leaving nothing until the rear fender well....anyway, a lot of chat about most trivial jeep details. At this point, if it runs good, the body is in great shape, it should do you well. I had a 4cyl YJ when I came out to Colo for college years ago....I ran a small lift and 31s - that is about all the 4 cyl will push and even then its a bit sluggish on the freeway and 5th gear is mostly for downhill....At least with the 4cyl, the EFI is really good, the gearing will be a bit lower and you have a 5 speed (hopefully not the Puegot). We ran a lot of the classic high pass trails back then with it on 31s. Honestly, If I had it today, I'd probably run 30x9.5 tires with a bit of rocker protection (not too much protection as the weight will add up on the 4cyl). You'll be hard pressed to run that thing into ground...so let it rev it up when needed and it should serve you well.

Welcome from another native Michigander! (I'm old; got here in 1987). My folks just moved back to MI (Milford, Union Lake, Birmingham, Sterling Heights - my whole family's there) in 2015.

Great find on the YJ! When the 4 cyl eventually wears out, many, many years from now...an LS would sound magnificent!
