Default Middle St Vrain & Coney Flats 7/2/2020

Had a great run up MSV and Coney flats today with Mile and Dave and Mikes kids. MSV seemed harder than I remember and Coney was a blast as always. The “gatekeeper” rocks right at the start seemed more dig out and bigger for some reason. I tried riding the high rocks but slipped off a rock and banged my diff on the way thru. Dave got stopped and we winched him back and then stacked some rocks to get him thru. Mike got thru with not a scrape thanks to some AMAZING spotting. Lol

The water crossings was not very deep but the weather couldn’t have been better. Thanks for coming out today guys!

The gatekeeper likely seemed harder because they clean it out every spring to make it harder. I hope you un-stacked the rocks you needed to get through.

I apologize, we didn't un stack the rocks. Made mistakes in following Matt's line through the gate keeper instead of getting out and evaluating a better line for me with 33's after slipping of the boulder and hanging up on my rear diff we had to pull me back and put few rocks under my right rear wheel to clear the diff. I apologize for not clearing them. Really had no issues with the rest of the trail as I stopped taking Matt's line through everything. Won't happen again.

In general, yes. When we ran MSV / Coney a couple summers back, there was at least one unmodified older 4runner with us which completed the trail. Your Rubicon is much better equipped than that runner was. The gatekeeper is pretty challenging, bit most of the trail is not a technically difficult trail.

Agreed with open_circuit. We were just up there two weekends ago, and a guy in his wife's stock new (from what I understood) 4Runner was stuck on the gatekeeper. Tried to get my hubby to pull line for him, and was told he didn't need no stinkin' line. He was Shown the Way sans line and they made it through the rest of the trail, with a little spotting. You'd be completely good. You have way more experience, too!
