    Default 4Runner tire question

We need to get new tires on my husband's 2016 4Runner SR5. He does not enjoy off-roading like I do, but wants to be able to take his truck to some higher elevation hiking trails that do require a bit of 4-wheeling to get to the trailhead. (And who knows, I may be able to convince him to go with me once in a while)! He's leaning toward the BFG KO2's simply because that's what I have on my Jeep, but I'd like to get feedback from you guys before we buy. He also might like a bigger tire for more clearance. What do you suggest?

I put Cooper Discoverer ATPs on my JK last time around. Have 40k on them so far and fully expect to get at least 50. They have been fine for off roading but I would not use them if I did mud runs.

They do very very well on wet and snowy paved roads, not so well on ice. They are priced real well. There is at least one other member here running them and he likes them as well.

There are some more moderate off-road tires available that might be a good compromise on weight and durability if he doesn't plan to do serious rock crawling. The Yokohama geolander A/T is an example. I'm quite happy with my KO/2s but I don't daily drive my Jeep and rarely drive it in snow or ice, so I can't comment on the tires for that purpose.

I run the hankook dynapro AT on my tacoma (and the Willys)...good price savings vs the BFG and really good in snow with full tread depth siping. Less aggressive tread pattern for off road, but also less road noise. Both sets I've put on the tacoma went 50k miles. I would not hesitate to put a 3rd set on my truck, but also considering the nankang AT as its even more budget conscious.

I also have the Cooper Discoverer ATPs but on my pickup (Ram 3500 4x4) and really like them. They are a 285/70R17 which is about a 33x11 and have a great quiet ride.

KO2’s are great for daily drivers that also off-road. KM3’s are amazing but an MT so not ideal for daily driving

I like the KO2's, (and he likes them too) but I'm less than impressed with them in slushy conditions in winter. I'm sliding all over the place especially on downhill curves. My husband drives too fast and abruptly (IMHO) so I'd rather he get something better in wet conditions. I also have a feeling that he might actually enjoy going 4-wheeling in the 4-runner. He just hates my Jeep because it's so small! (He's 6'4" - not enough head room for him).

That’s odd, I thought my KO2’s on my Ram 2500 did great in winter driving. I commute from Allenspark to Boulder 4 times a week (100 mile round trip) and drove over Vail pass a couple times in a snow storm and they kicked ass.
Perhaps look at Toyo AT 2 Open Country all terrains. They are a great AT tire that also wheels very well

I put the General Grabber ATX on my 2500 Silverado last fall. Similar pattern to KO2 but a good cost savings. Handled real well on everything from deeper snow to dirt to ice and slush. I do try to rotate at 4000 miles.

Currently running Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws on our Xterra and they've been excellent in every condition, and the price is nice https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tir...wildpeak-a-t3w

I have the Discoverer st maxx (255/80r17) on my 4Runner.
They do well for everyday driving (summer and winter) and are wearing well.
But they don't have as much off-road traction as I'd like (possibly because I went with a skinny tire though) - so next time I will go with something more aggressive (and bigger).
The 4Runner gets used off road 80% of the weekends during 4wheeling/camping season and I drive it "daily" (non-COVID lol ) and I have a higher tolerance of tire noise than my wife.

Second vote for the General Grabber ATXs. Similar tread pattern to the KO2, but more siped. Much better in the snow and ice IMO. Cheaper than the KO2s too. Have had them on my Titan for over a year and they've been great.
