    Default Wheeler Geologic Area

Going to Wheeler Geologic Area this Thursday 6/18 if anyone is interested. We're taking backroads down on Wednesday and heading to WGA early Thursday morning from Creede. It's open and should be reasonably dry, weather there has been great.

Had a great time getting there, but could not do Wheeler- my dog got sick on the road out to Wheeler, the bouncing was too much for him that day, so we turned back. 7 poop bags later he was empty at both ends... otherwise an amazing trip, the best part of which was the drive down there. We put together a route that goes from Monarch Pass to Lake City with less than 12 miles of pavement, I'll post up a report / video / GPX soon. We actually turned to Creede at 149 so it was more pavement than that for us.

Not sure which road you mean- the road to Wheeler Geologic area is just another trail, but we had a mishap; at the trailhead we met another couple and decided to run it together. He led and thought the road split and rejoined, so we went left when we should have gone right. Turns out it was a logging operation and the "road" was about a day old and full of big holes where they had bulldozed trees out of the path and the roots left huge gaps. It was ridiculous, we managed to get back out and my dog got sick from the bouncing. We got off the trail, poor guy was sick for about an hour and we called it off, went hiking instead. Wheeler was busy- it is no longer an undiscovered gem, there are flyers and maps in town and a TON of ATVs were there on a weekday morning. We also ran the Bachelor Loop, that was cool.

The roads getting down to wheeler from Monarch Pass were incredible, one of the nicest drives I've had in a while. This is it:

I traveled the tail of your roads Thurs eve / Friday morn but in the reverse direction. Starting at 23:31 thru to the end at CO-149 / asphalt. Cebolla Day Use Area (with my UPS truck experience) at 25:19, Spruce Campground at 25:40 (you pulled into campsite #8 I think and turned around - we stayed in #7 that you passed before turning around - I well enjoyed the campsite - creek sounds but not overpowering, scant traffic, next to zero nuisance bugs), Hidden Valley campground at 26:09.

I found the drive / scenery to be quite enjoyable. I could see spending more time in the area - it's just a slog to get there.

That's a crazy place for a Fedex truck! I loved that area too, it's stunning all through Los Pinos Pass and Cebolla Creek. Great camping.
