    Default Moab late May? Revisiting

Looks like Moab is starting to open up and although Memorial Day is booked out I’m thinking the week after Memorial Day. Lots of opening still available and little traffic with everyone going back home after the holiday.

Im up for other date suggestions also, Trent? Anyone else? This won’t be my camping desert trip..... wife and son coming and staying at our favorite Moab hotel.

let me know if anyone is interested in making some plans!!!!

Looks like camping is out anyway. I can't really plan anything, but if you pick dates I might drive out for some trails.

That's a good link, thank you Paul.

I've still got hotel reservations for Monday 8 June to Friday 12 June.
Myself and another JK have been planning on going since Feb.

Looks like we might make it still!

Since we have plenty of time, we are going to hit all the standby's for sure. Hells Revenge, Top O' the world (That overhang pic is obligatory), probably White Rim.

We may leave the girls in town one day and hit the harder ones like Pritchett or Steel Bender.

    Completely open to suggestions!

Do you have any in mind you really want to hit?

There are SO many to choose from!

I'll follow this thread. I am not sure about making firm plans for Moab just yet, but I can go just about any time once things are clearly open and it is obvious Moab isn't swamped.

I would love to hit Hells revenge and Poison Spyder Mesa with the Jeep but I’ve also always wanted to do Lockhart Basin..... although it’s a long one

I’m not sure the wife wants to wait until mid June but I’ll try to convince her. I can’t do much wheelin without folks to wheel with

I am interested in attending. May or June, doesn't matter to me. Pritchett is on my bucket list, also poison spider; steel bender looks cool too... I'm up for anything at this point!

This is still up in the air for me but my wife is still down for going. The route I really really want to do for a long time is Lockhart Basin (40-ish desolate miles), a long route that I believe can be done in one long day or two days with a night of camping. I know Trent did this last year and wasn't interested in doing it again.... I think it's moderate and the first few miles are supposed to be the most difficult. I'd really like to take my Powerwagon and do this.... I'm getting 37" BFG KM3's put on any day now and it should be easily capable of this route even stock. But I definitely need a spotter because seeing out of the front of this thing is almost impossible ;-/

Aaron (GoSlo), I may still be able to convince the wife to go the second week of June. Would Lockhart Canyon be something you and your buddy would be interested in doing with me if I can go that week? I wouldn't want to take my Powerwagon on the hard routes like Hells Revenge, Poison Spyder, Moab Rim and the like.... even though I know its capable I don't have rock sliders yet and really don't want to do anything crazy. However, I could potentially pull the Jeep out there and do one day of some classics in the Jeep and one day in the big truck.

Anyways, just wanted to keep this alive. I'm DEFINITELY going to go to Moab between the end of May and mid-June because it'll get too hot after that...... so anyone who's even somewhat interested lets hear it!!!!

A group of us did Lockhart Basin last year, it's a full day depending on how fast you drive it. We did lockheart canyon as well, it’s a quick aside at the tail end of the Basin trail and takes you down to the river.

Lackheart Basin is rated difficult by funtreks and has at least one steep climb topped with boulders. It is sure to challenge the ground clearance of a stock height powerwagon. I only bring this up so you can make an informed decision. It’s only a few obstacles that give this trail a difficult rating because there are not bypasses, the rest of the 40 miles is basically a dirt road with an occasional tight switchback. Incredibly scenic.

Because I ran it last year I am more interested in other trails, however I do remember some awesome places to camp along that trail so If a group were camping it may sway my decision.

`Was along with Trent. Lockhart Basin - not interested again (too long of the same, same, same - though I am glad I did it - so if you wish to - then get it done). Lockhart Canyon - that was a hoot / would do that again.

This rock set was perhaps the only obstacle I recall for the trek: (EDIT: The perspective is quite different from Derek's photo, above, but it's the same obstacle)

Crawlex and Jim covered it for Lockhart. The photo Crawlex posted is the obstacle I warned you about in PM, Matt. I think that's where I destroyed my upper control arms on the Jeep. Also, as Crawlex suggested, if there was a group camping outing, the rest of the trail would be more interesting.

The section Jim called a hoot is very different from the rest of the trail. That section goes down to the river (blue spur on map) and is in dry sandy riverbed. The river view isn't much to take in due to the dense growth on the edge, but the (short) trail to the river was pretty fun.

Actually I think the White Rim is the route I really want to do instead! LOL, it's longer so would be a great camp half way thru and make it a 2 day trip. I'm not sure how hard it is to get a permit, anybody know?? I would love to plan a White Rim trip...... Lockhart can wait for now

Obviously the national parks have to be opened before this route is open..... but I bet that'll happen soon... hopefully.

That obstacle doesn't look too bad... My Powerwagon will be on 37" mud terrains so 2 inches higher than stock and stock this thing is already very high. People in Powerwagon are doing the hardest trails in Moab, but I don't want to risk any body damage and without sliders I'm going to stick to the "easier" routes like Fins & Things and hopefully the White Rim soon

Derek's picture is from above with Trent just getting into it. My picture is from below with Trent just completing it. IMO, vastly different perspectives in the photos (my picture makes it seem flat and easy). While you'd be on 37's, it's something that long wheelbase would be more apt for getting hung up (the boulders aren't on flat trail, the low side is much lower as Derek's picture shows).

I'd like to watch your PW work across it!

Jim, if you come also and spot me.... we'll both be happy! Mission Accomplished I've got front and rear lockers and skid plates underneath..... just no sliders yet and those rocks look like they might be rocker panel happy

So today my sister managed to book an airbnb for the week 8-12 June.
We had reservations at the Sleep inn near Arches and canceled those.

The only day we aren't wheeling (all day) is going to be Thursday at 1400.
We've booked a 2 hour Jet boat ride.

We aren't committed to any trail at any particular time, so yeah let's go ride wherever, whenever!

Just because - here are a few more pics....
Trent on 33s - its not easy getting the LF to walk up the big boulder.

Udi with a front locker also on 33ish

    Jim on 35s

Here you can see the front face of the boulder on the driver side - you either need a very good approach angle, or have enough lift the front bumper can clear over the top - based on Trent's 33s, that might be 28 of vertical height/clearance and Trent is pushed over to the passenger side pretty far - the face of the boulder is taller to the left where the wider track of the PW might have to go.

I think the PW would be awesome to watch put the hammer down on it - I think the long wheelbase would really help push up and over it, but I would be conscious about the approach angle and if there is any front bumper overhang before the LF tire gets to the rock. I also think it could possibly drag the rocker area when the front comes down over the two big boulders and before the rear wheels climb up (the downside of long wheelbase). But a PW on 37s is up in the air, so it might not have much issue clearing...I think sliders might ease stress and as the trail is kind of narrow, and the PW is wide, line selection would be just go where it fits and push the skinny pedal.
