Seems like a lot of people mount wide tires on fairly narrow wheels.

I think my wheels are 7.5" wide, I have a full set of 33's that I was going to mount on wider wheels, then mount all season tires to the stock wheels.

Looks like I won't be buying all of that any time soon, so I am hoping it won't be a hassle to mount these tires on my stock wheels. I already have everything in place to ensure there won't be fitment issues.

Hopefully things turn around and I can proceed as planned after not too long.

In the past I've had mixed experiences getting Discount Tire to mount 12.50's to 7.5 inch wheels. Depending on the person behind the counter they either went ahead with it, or if "Johnny Law" was working that day I was quoted scripture and verse as to why they shall not mount the tires. At which point I went to H&H Tire and got it done. So in my experience it depends.

I get all my tires done here, they barely talk to you.

A lot of the franchise or chain shops like Discount may balk at mounting 12.5 tires on 7.5 rims....They have liability issues to worry about that create SOPs for them across all stores etc....I love my local Discount Tire, but when I need something done that might run against their SOP, I find a local old mechanic with a run down shop and bunch of beaters in the front and ask them to do it and pay cash - then they don't have to officially give you receipt etc and there is no record....Another question is are the rims really 7.5" wide? Haven't seen many of those over the years...

That is what I was hoping. I usually got to little independent shops anyway.

Now I just have to wait until the cold snap passes so I don't Crack my soft top windows.

Should be fun stuffing the 2 door to the gills.

    Thank you gents.

The rims should be no problem to mount the tires on. As they should be 17x 8’s

How sure are you that the front tires wont contact the frame at full steering? In my very limited experience, many stock wheels seem to have a larger backspacing than many of the aftermarket offroad wheels I have looked at. (I get that mixed up alot. I am assuming more backspacing = the mounting face is closer to the outside of the wheel. Please correct me if I am turned around here). I always thought that could be intentional to bring the scrub radius closer in line with a larger diameter tire and add clearance to the frame/control arms/leafsprings for turning.

that is correct...double edged issue here. More backspacing keeps the wheel tucked in more, which means the fenderwell clearance can stay smaller....If you kept the same backspacing with a bigger/wider tire, then you could eventually run into rubbing the outer diameter of the tire against the inner fenderwell, and also hitting frame before reaching the limit of turning. Plus, it the tires get really wide, they can start to have clearance issues on the inside of the wheel where steering knuckle/components are brake components might be. Running less backspacing will push the wheels out further allows for clearance on the inside of the wheel/tire and allows for the tires to turn to full lock without hitting the frame/etc., but also makes inner fenderwell rub more likely along the outer diameter of the tire (especially when turning and stuffing). Trimming the fenders/removing the plastic inner fenders and getting the body up higher (lift) helps give the fender room needed both for larger diameter tires, but also for a wider tire track (either through a wider tire or less backspacing on the wheels, or combination of both).
My two cents is that for most moderate lifts (2-3") with an increase in tires size of 2" or so, stock wheels are usually fine - you might get some rub at full turn lock, and/or when the tire stuffs pretty hard...Its hard to do with modern p-metric ratio tires, but I kind of like going taller, but not getting any wider as it provides a bit more clearance (and maybe I just prefer a taller skinnier tire). Besides, is there a decent looking aftermarket wheel these days? - keep the stockers!

I think we all know (and appreciate the photos from) where your preferences lie when it comes to new and old Jeeps.

Hopefully Jason gets his tires mounted up with one of the tire shop suggestions provided and will let us know how it all goes.

    fair enough!

but I will say, that I would love to build up my Tacoma into a cool moderate wheeling truck...or would not mind at all having a new JL 2dr running 35s....but I also like building stuff, and building old stuff is way more fun to me than building new stuff (basically, the new stuff is over my head), and I can build 2 old jeeps for less than the cost of one new one. Plus if it breaks, its just old junk...breaking a DD is a complete PITA.

I am using spacers for now. Not ideal for offroad, but they are from a reputable company. I also installed a 2" spring lift not too long ago.

In the future I'm looking at these, because they are cheap and fit better. https://www.quadratec.com/p/quadrate...l-gladiator-jt, then I'll throw some pizza cutter highway tires on the stock wheels and sell the spacers.

I COULD, allegedly, go 35", but I'd rather have more travel, and save bigger tires for after I upgrade the front axle a bit and put a better lift on. At this point... that could be 5 or so years out I'd guess.

Just go with 285/75/17's as a compromise! They are much more narrow 11.5 vs 12.5 and they are almost 34" tall. This is the tire I have on my Ram and on my sons TJ.

Oh and using spacers for off-road is fine. I've had spacers on my sons TJ for years and my TJ I installed them last year and now I have no rubbing on the upper control arm and it off-roads like a maniac

I like the sentiment - but I think he may have already purchased the 12.5s...

put 33x12.5 Patriots on my 19 4runner. Used 1.5 spacers and 2" lift..had to trim 1/2 inch inside fender protector..Les Schwab mounted mine and they are 7.5" wheels off a Tacoma..Had to take them in though as they wont mount with spacers.
