    Unhappy For Your Amusement

Most of you don't know me but I left FR4X4 a few years back for Florida. Florida is one flat state so I left my truck behind and bought at 2WD 4Runner. I took up photography to fill the void. I like to room around remote areas like the Everglades which is pretty cool. Today, since we're social-distancing and I needed to get out I went to a nearby area named Picayune Strand State Forest. It's 78,000 acres so plenty of space to wander around. Side note: This is the area that was being sold way back when the phrase "buying swampland in Florida" came from. I've been there a lot and went today and decided to take a road I hadn't before. Yep, bad decision to take 2wd on deep sand and have the serpentine belt fail.

So I lost momentum and buried myself in the sand.

Fortunately there are still 4x4 people wandering around and nice enough to pull and old man out of a mess. Oh, there's no cell service in the area too.

At least I got out of the house but could have done w/o spending hours in this unshaded patch of sand at 85 degrees while trying to free myself before help showed up.

So in summary I'll close by saying I may be in the flatlands but I'm still capable of doing stupid stuff!

A nice chuckle - life happens. Good on the folks to help out.

Serp belt failed? No water pump puts you stuck right there. Did they pull you out to tow-truck-land???

I'm always worried about that myself even though I've never had it happen. I carry a spare when I'm wheeling just in case, which I bet makes most folks chuckle.

Not me. Spare hose clamps are clamped onto radiator & heater hoses - just in case. Spare v-belts and radiator hoses are zip-tied to the underside of the driver/passenger seats.

Sadly, with Serp's - I think their failure is often a bearing failure and that is often not tended out of the on-vehicle "spares" box (at least for the casual day-wheeling we do - which is why this forum exists - to get out with at least one other vehicle - one of those vehicles becomes the recovery truck, if needed).

We all decide how much "what if" options we can recover from. I carry a separate fuel pump too - but then I've had issues in that department. I should carry spare sensors (Throttle Position, O2, Crankshaft). It'd be nice to carry a spare computer too.

That is genius. You need to start a backups tips'n'tricks post, I'd love to hear other good ideas people have. Beats keeping them in a box in the back of my rig.

For the most part - Search for about any "Brody" post - search for threads started by him. He was a member many years back and he posted a TON of tips & info.

Glad you got out safe Chris. I find myself missing Florida in an odd way. We'll be making a trip (likely next year) to Sanibel Island. I love it over there.

Here's my update now that I've found the damage - blown head gasket, seized PS pump, blown radiator. Damn, I'm going for 4WD after I sell this.

So much for my belief I didn't need 4WD in this flat state.

Jackie, let me know when you make it to Sanibel, we go there pretty often to visit the Ding Darling Refuge.

Sam, yeah what was I thinking about 2WD.

Everyone else, thanks for the comments and stay safe.

I didn't know 2wd 4 runners existed. Makes about as much sense as a wing on a Honda.

2wd 4runner seems less weird to me than the 2wd TJ that jeep offered for a year. That one is a real head scratcher

    Jeeps have come in 2wd since the beginning flatfenders...here is a 1957 dj3a - same as a cj3a but in 2wd.

Here is an army 2wd dj5a that is now owned by a friend of mine in Texas....he just added a 4wd M38 (military version of the cj3a) and is looking to sell the dj if anyone is interested...
