    Default Home Improvement Thread

We have a what did you do to your 4x4 today thread...what about a quick glimpse of what cool house or home project did you do? If you done something cool with a pic or two, post it up in the thread below...

Jen and I have been slowly working on a light basement remodel....mostly wall repair (from some old water damage and some minor mold issues), repainting, new flooring, and some bathroom fixture etc upgrades. Nothing too fancy - its a basement for laundry and gear storage. But the walls were a bit sickly and the vinyl tiles were peeling up.

    Some bathroom upgrades:

had to take a detour and redo the toilet flange. It is 60 year old cast iron and the flange was completely corroded and rusted and it came off with the toilet stuck on the wax seal. Used one of those seals that goes down inside the pipe and you screw it to open it out against the inner wall of the pipe. Then had to drill it into the concrete slab and then cut the new flooring in around it. Doing all this in between emails and online learning for my high school students this week.

Jen putting in the last flooring board today:

walls and flooring for the 2 rooms, small hallway, and bathroom essentially done minus some last day touch ups...good to be able to see the end of the project is in sight...

Last step is baseboards...This is what we are going for...right now the trim is lightly primed about the same cream color as the walls, but it will get painted a bright white (maybe semi-gloss or similar).

If you've done something cool...post up below...

Looks great James! I'm in the "past member with access" few as I'm in FL now but since we're pretty limited on getting out I'm browsing FR to amuse myself. Does adding Hurricane glass count? Not something you folks have to consider

Hi Chris - good to see you are still around a bit...I grew up in central FL and would say hurricane windows count! And I never saw a basement - most places you could dig down to the water table with a standard shovel!

Thanks James, being cautious here as a whole lot of New Yorkers are coming down to avoid the mess there. Not what we need but that's life these days.

Basements? Nope, never even heard of one anywhere in the state. IIRC, our new place (moved in Nov to have more space.) is a couple feet above sea level and as James said, dig too deep, if you can dig at all, and you'll surely hit water.

So hurricane glass or steel/aluminum shutters are the way to stay safe. Our place has standard sliding glass doors that didn't do very well in keeping Irma out so we've decided to do it right. We _should_ be okay with 200mph winds when the get installed.

Sorry if this is boring...just some baseboard trim cut and fitted, but not finished. Just laid into the place - going to need some shims here and there and still need to paint and nail in place...but it feels good to be this far...
The two big rooms - pretty easy overall. The trim boards came in 16' lengths from HD, but we cut them down to 8' both to fit in my truck bed when bringing them home, and my workbench space in the garage is also limited to about 8' when trying work with the miter cuts etc...so we have some exta overlap joints on the long walls and tried to strategically place some joints behind what normally will be open doors etc.

Obviously, as many of you know, the bathroom can be the most time consuming part - it came out really nice with just one joint a bit goofy - but won't be as bad as it looks once we get it shimmed right.

okay - here was something we didn't really know what to do with. At some point, I think the wall was extended a bit here to make a full room enclosure with door. For whatever reason, the wall surface has a bit of a step - maybe 1/4-3/8" or so. We discussed and test cut a few different ways to trim this piece...I have in my head what I think the perfect joint would look like, but don't have the skill and/or tools necessary for such precise cuts. In the end, this simple method won out - standard 45 miter overlap (looks like a square butt end in the pic, but its not- It will look better once the cut end is painted to match. What would you all have done?

a slightly better pic of the joint:

"It's a basement" I think would have won out with me. Otherwise, an inside and outside joint set could be toyed with - heck - you have extra time on your hands - why not try???

Once the room has stuff in it - only you two might notice.

Possibly a 1x? cut to no higher than the trim, the depth of the step plus the trim up against the wall, then butt against it from the two sides?

Or just cut the outer most trim piece flush with the step, paint, and call it good.

They make cardboard drywall shims 4’ x1.5” x1/8”. I would have shimmed the studs before hanging the drywall.

Its a basement though no one will notice if you paint the raw trim edge white.

You guys did nice work! Looks good as is, or maybe take the piece of trim that sits proud and mark where it meets the face of the other one; cut it on an angle, maybe 45 degrees from that point to "soften" the union.

edit- just reread your thread and I missed that you did cut it at an angle, it just looks straight in the pics. I'd leave it and paint it.

Got tires of multiple whiteboards in my office so I made one about 80" x 33". Just masonite with a roll of self-adhesive whiteboard on it, and some trim to pretty it up and form a shelf for markers and erasers below it.

Also put a picture shelf over a bed. Filling in the hours...

Making progress...almost done. Bathroom is done (still a couple touch up spots to go along baseboards where we putty over the joint and nail holes etc - wife's job - but she gave me the go ahead to install toilet etc). The more I get done on this project, the more she is willing to help me bleed the brake system on the willys - really thinking a mitty vac might be easier than keeping her happy!

The big laundry room is mounted and putty is drying - touch up the paint in another day or so.

All that is left is the smaller gear storage room. Overall, I like the floor more than I thought I would, but the wall color didn't turn out quite like I had hoped...as its a basement, very little natural light so wanted light colored walls, but was hoping for something with a bit more tan/brown whereas there is a hint more yellow than I'd like. After painting this basement, we did some painting and remodel work on our rental condo in Montana and switch to a slightly different off-white (called Ash) and I like that one a lot better, and wish we had found that earlier.

Nothing lets you know how crooked your walls are until you have to put baseboard up...

got new locks for our security doors and learned how to rekey them myself with a kit from amazon. It's surprisingly easy after the first one. I screwed up the first one and had to reload the springs and upper pins, which made me very careful.

I used this video for instruction
