With the temps having been in the teens and twenties and there still being about 4" of the white stuff still on the ground, there was glaringly obvious cold spot in the new shop. The 10' tall x 16' wide overhead metal door. It, unlike our other overhead door, is not insulated. So instead of spending another winter complaining about it, I decided to solve the problem.
Using 1.5" foam board leftovers from insulating the shop walls last year will not only clean up some space in the storage sheds, it just so happens to be the perfect fit. This will provide about an R9 rating, so much better than non isulated. But by how much?
I installed the foam board on half of the door and let it stay that way overnight with the shop's heater set to 70*.
Then used a digital temperature gauge the following morning to take readings of the door. The results were fairly impressive.
The insulated sections were 68.9° and the bare metal door was 39.4°. A whopping 30° (ok, 29.5) difference!!!
Then I promptly finished up the rest of the door.
So far it has taken away the noticeable cold spot and the heater is running less than it did. Just in time for the weather to start warming back up. I am sure it will help deaden some of the noise as well, but that one isn't as big of a deal. Lesson learned, don't wait a winter to insulate the last remaining door...
