    Default Overhead shop door insulation

With the temps having been in the teens and twenties and there still being about 4" of the white stuff still on the ground, there was glaringly obvious cold spot in the new shop. The 10' tall x 16' wide overhead metal door. It, unlike our other overhead door, is not insulated. So instead of spending another winter complaining about it, I decided to solve the problem.

Using 1.5" foam board leftovers from insulating the shop walls last year will not only clean up some space in the storage sheds, it just so happens to be the perfect fit. This will provide about an R9 rating, so much better than non isulated. But by how much?

I installed the foam board on half of the door and let it stay that way overnight with the shop's heater set to 70*.

Then used a digital temperature gauge the following morning to take readings of the door. The results were fairly impressive.

The insulated sections were 68.9° and the bare metal door was 39.4°. A whopping 30° (ok, 29.5) difference!!!

Then I promptly finished up the rest of the door.

So far it has taken away the noticeable cold spot and the heater is running less than it did. Just in time for the weather to start warming back up. I am sure it will help deaden some of the noise as well, but that one isn't as big of a deal. Lesson learned, don't wait a winter to insulate the last remaining door...

Lol, yes, once the AC is installed (still gotta talk to TJ about this). But this past summer the doors were all open with big fans running in each door way to try to create some sort of airflow.

If your summer fans aren't the swamp cooler style - that's a project I could see you adding to your existing fans.

Thanks, but moisture and raw steel storage isn't a great combo. I had a swamp cooler in the old shop that was used sparingly, and I learned my lesson. AC is in my future, nice and dry while being cool.

With the shop doors fully insulated, I decided to dive further into my whiteboard obsession. No need for large, clunky stands that take up too much room and get in the way more than help. Takes up some of the "wasted" space and they can still be read even with the door in it's open position. Only added a tiny bit more weight so the doors still function as they should.

Not my everyday world - but humidity and oxidation / rust of steel is somewhat a general knowledge item (at least for someone who's worked on lawn equipment / cars encountering rusted bolts).

    Your shop's look'n nice.

Have you considered running a Heat pump out there. AC in summer and heat source in winter. You just might want better filtration that you get with just a wall mounted heat pump unit.

Jay bates is a popular wood worker who added mini split HVAC to his shop and expanded the filter capacity for the dirty environment.

I am game for whatever works best. I will honestly lean on those who do this professionally. Not saying I won't double check their info. TJ has always been a stand up guy and I believe I can trust his opinion. I will see what he has to say when the time comes.
