Default Deer Creek - Saints John Report

Beautiful day, good group. Everyone arrived on time except the guy we waited 20 min for only to find out he wasn’t with our group. Trail was in great shape and not too busy. Everything went well until the bottom of the second climb on Saints John, we my nephews steering failed due to a stock weld failure.

No steering. So we strapped it together and nursed it down the trail aways when one of the straps broke and we hade to re strap it. The second strapping worked well enough that we were able to nurse it back to Montezuma and down to keystone. He has the best AAA plan so called them and had a trailer there in about 1.5 hours. And they drown him, his dog, and his Rubi back to his preferred shop in Aurora. He arrived home at 8:45 PM. I about 7PM as he sent me home when we were certain the tow was on the way.

All. Adam says thank you for your patience and help. He really appreciated it. I did too.

On a more positive note I had my aprs going again and was about to Text message my wife’s phone from my ham and get a reply back. This is exciting because it makes solo wheeling more doable with that safety factor. That said it only worked when we were above tree limit and even tracking was poor in the deep valleys.

Bummer about the failure. Glad it could limp down for a tow home. Is it a JL? I've heard there has been a lot of poor welding on them.

Built JKU (R?). The welds holding the track bar to the axle failed. When he turned to the left, the body of the Jeep just shifted above the axle. Glad to hear Adam got all the way home safely.

Thanks for the report. On my way back from Holy Cross on I-70, I think I was following a Ryan's Recovery tow truck with your nephew's Jeep on a trailer. Glad he was able to get back at a decent hour.

If it was A gray jku with some spyder stickers on it. Likely yes.

That stinks. fwiw, I was in a group where a similar thing happened and the owner used a short piece of chain and a bolt to hold it solidly and get off the trail. You wrap the chain around the parts you want to hold together, put the bolt through the links and tighten it down. It clamps it very strongly, I was surprised how well it works. I've carried 2' of chain and a 7/16" grade 8 bolt ever since.

Get em now, they disappear in two months. If there are any in particular you want originals of let me know and I can email them. You can zoom into the originals quite a bit more than the ones on iCloud.

I used to carry a length of chain in my tool bag, but I never found a use for it. I only thought of using it to pull / tow things, for which chain is very poorly suited. This sounds like a reasonable application for a chain, and makes me think I should consider putting it back into my gear bag.

After the Deer Creek / Saints John a few of us went to the end of Peru Creek and then up Cinnamon Gulch - looking for the tall mine building on the hill (hint - it was 300' behind the locked gate). Not finding the building on the hill we poked about the mill at the bottom.

Highlight photos below. A full set are at this link:

Trent, what's the condition of your daughter's finger?

I'm sorry for the pinch and hope she recovers well.

Detail: She rode with me from the lunch spot to the repair spot. At the repair spot she caught her finger between the passenger door and the mirror mount when the door opened all of the way (she nicely tried to catch it / keep it from hitting the mirror).

Bruise in the nail. She'll be fine. Didn't complain about it at all today, and when I asked about it, she just said it was turning a little purple. Thanks for checking

She rode with Jim because she refused to ride with us while my wife was driving a stretch of the trail!
