I looked at the books too and am thinking a bit of an early start (8a moving) with a north to south travel, with the river overlook stop, would be possible - exiting the south end. The drive back on pavement would likely be after dark. I wish more research though as the FunTreks books talked about out-n-back times and we'd look (aside from the Colorado river viewpoint) at being through travel for both.

Stats: The TrailsOffroad GPX file for Lockhart Canyon has data points extending from highway 211 to the Colorado River viewpoint. Their track, one way, was 20.9 miles long and had a duration of 2h 25m. This includes a 25 minute stop out near the river - so 2 hours moving (one way).
The stretch of Lockhart Canyon between the river and the intersecting trail to the east was 5.4 miles and 56 minutes (one way). The 56 minutes includes the 25 minute stop near the river.
EDIT: I’ll try to get more trail stats later.

The southern half of the Lockhart Basin trail, which is also the easy access to Lockhart Canyon, should be significantly faster than the northern (and interesting) half of that trail. So... if we go north to south, by the time we get to the Lockhart Canyon turn, we'll know if there is enough time left for that round trip. At that point, we can possibly split into 2 groups if some want to run the canyon and some want to head back to Moab. i.e. we don't need to decide now. Does everyone agree that we want to run Lockhart Basin from north to south? That's what I would do.
Sounds good to me.
Fine with me

Looks like you've picked a really great set of trails. We're heading into Moab thursday morning via Gateway / John Brown Canyon / Thompson Canyon / Onion Creek, and if all goes well we will try to cross paths at Dellanbaugh / Secret Spire that afternoon. We're taking our Xterra which is stock plus skids and good tires, so we're going to stick to easier stuff.
I'm good with about everything that is being said. But could someone just summarize what Thursday morning is going to look like? Time and place and trail etc. That would help my planning greatly
Hey nate...check the thread in planned runs...discussion has moved there.
