Default Need recommendations for new engine and shop install.

    Hi all,
I was starting to replace my rms, but sadly ive found terrible shaved bearing in the oil pan.

I look for your advice on where to ask for quotes to perform this labor. I'm in northern colorado ( severance)

If you have an idea on what I should expect to pay for a new 4.0L H.O. and labor it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

these are not the cheapest, but they are IMO the best remans. They have an installer locator https://www.jasperengines.com/stock-replacement-engines

I've used these guys before, would recommend them and they are a Jasper shop, but they're not really near you... https://www.hotchkissauto.com/

I have been kicking the Idea of replacing my engine for a while. S&J engines is where I would buy mine. They offer a 7 year 100k warrenty (you have to have it installed by a certified mechanic or tested on a dyno by one after the install) I just put in for a qoute and it would cost me. $1594.00 plus $200 core plus shipping plus assurance warrenty $250 and $175 to a dock near you for pick-up. Total at checkout $2,219.00 Which I think is well worth it to refresh my engine. Just need to convince my wife. 😃

Here is a video on how to swap in a motor. I have not watched the whole video, but it might help you?

Yea they do everything other than install. The biggest thing that concerns me is lining up the engine again for install and getting bolts started.

The hardest thing to find lately is something illustrating that cleanly and explain tips/ tricks to getting it bolted back up.

Did you pull the trigger on s&j motor, I couldn't load their webpage for some reason?

Google it might be easier to load it from the search engine. I"m in the planning stages for that. My engine runs and sounds the same as when I bought it. It has always had a terrible noise at 3.5 k rpms. So I'm not too concerned running it this way for over 20k miles so far, But I ran across this and I'm pretty sure that it will be a direct swap. I'm just considering going for it.

Nice find, I might consider used if I can find a healthy high output 4.0L H.O. I think I may first need to buy a hoist and engibe stand.

Still on the fence on that. I have a ton of work that I have lined up for the Xj . Just need to get to it! Swapping a motor adds a lot more.

Same, unfortunately some of that work was already done to the engine before I discovered this issue. I did get the s&j web site working, however their shipping info link keeps going to their main page.

I really wanted Jasper, motor was 3250,+ labor and parts an installer was asking almost 5700$

I pulled my motor and reinstalled. In between I took it to a machine shop to get it tanked and some work done that I couldn't do or didn't feel comfortable doing myself. Was the first time I ever pulled a motor and it went pretty easy including the reinstall. I bought a HF engine hoist and that makes it quite easy to get things in and out and aligned. I did pull my transmission and TC first, and reinstalled the engine with the those as well. Obviously, I've never pulled a 4.0, but guessing its pretty doable...maybe some of us can help you out. I can also loan out or sell my HF engine hoist if your interested...

As you were looking for some shops: these are in Denver, so not close to you, but could give you more information for pricing out the project. If you are looking to rebuild or replace your current 4.0, might consider western engine (https://www.westernenginesupply.com/). I looked into these guys when I did my engine rebuild - they were my second choice and a bit more budget oriented. I went with Spitfire engine (https://www.facebook.com/Spitfire-En...9552736109034/) for most of my machine work rebuild. There was an old-timer that was quite familiar with my old school v6. They don't really do budget minded rebuilds with a bit more focus on improving performance. In all my research, cost of a full rebuild was around $3k when all said and done replacing EVERYTHING (maybe $2500 if some of it could have been reused like crank and oil pump etc). There was no option for replacement. A quick search of parts and pieces for a 4.0 suggests its a bit cheaper - so maybe a full rebuild around 2000-2500? I believe western engine said pulling and installing the engine for me would be around $1500 - and keep in mind my old engine is about as easy an pull/install as there is. A cost of $2500 in labor for pull/install seems about right for a bit more modern engine. I would say $4500-$5000 is about as best as you can do to pay for the entire project - and there are always some unexpected issues and extra parts. Generally price of rebuild shop work and price of new replacement are about the same...things do start to get pricey when you pay for removal and install and the hourly labor adds up...so if you can afford the time and find a bit of help on here...pulling and re-installing either a rebuilt or new crate engine seems like the best way to save some money. I pulled mine by myself in about 4hrs one evening...I bet your could be done in less than a day with some help. If you had a crate engine ready to go, reinstall takes a bit more time getting everything hooked back up, but guessing it could finished up the next day. A weekend of work and your good to go and saved half the cost.

I do believe self install is the route I'm going. Financially it's almost a third cheaper
