    Default I'm Trapped

Couldn't get the garage door to open all the way this morning, it went up about 3' and stopped like something was catching. I spent a while poking around the tracks and wheels until I saw the springs, looks like one snapped. I just measured my springs and unfortunately my door is solid wood and very heavy, the ones they stock at ACE and Home Depot (the only people answering the phone on a Sunday morning) seem to be for composite or aluminium doors and are not strong enough. Just ordered this: https://diy-garage-door-parts.com/bu...75-in-x-37-in/

One of mine snapped last year and it sounded and felt (upstairs bedroom) like a bomb went off. I didn't trust myself to install it so I had someone do it.

Quite dangerous to diy without experience. They need to be matched so both need replaced. I had a company do mine a few years ago. Around $200 iirc.

I lost a garage door spring earlier this year. I hired someone to change them. He was able to do it in about 45 minutes, and I consider every penny well spent on that. I don't mess with big springs under tension. Happy to give you name and number if you want a reference.

One of mine busted and the installer replaced both. I asked why and he commented on having even tension on both sides / matched springs as the reason for replacing both.

    I'd say DIY.

Thanks all, I ended up setting up a service for the morning, $300.00 +/- to replace both springs, cables and all 3 bearings. Just the springs were 100.00 for me, and then they have to ship. It's not about the money, and the job doesn't scare me, it's really about not waiting two days for shipping.

I also usually don't mess with garage springs. A cable came off a pulley once and I did fix that.

I'm surprised you didn't hear the spring break, also. When ours failed a few months ago, it woke everyone in the house from dead sleep at ~2am. It was an extremely loud bang, and shook the house a bit.

Good decision Paul. When I had one replaced years ago the installer apologized for being a day late. He had to fill in for another guy who was grotesquely inured when his grip slipped on the bar he was using to tighten the spring. Not for amateurs.

I have a friend who lost two fingers to those, so good calling somebody to do it.

www.QualityGarageDoorColorado.com just did a great job for 317.80, took less than 30 minutes. I am typing this with 10 fingers, the garage door goes up and down, I will consider it money well spent. It's a detached garage so we didn't hear it, maybe thought it was a truck or construction or something if we did. The installer said they are loud when they break too.

Price sounds in line with what I paid. I had nylon rollers installed at the same time, also. A couple of my older steel rollers were mangled and binding. My door is nearly silent after the new springs and rollers.

Glad you got it fixed without injury or drama. Did the repair guy muscle it open to do the repair?

I did it, with one spring and the remote it wasn't too hard. He lowered it with the remote when he was working on it, and after that it was done. Lifting it is exactly what I bought my way out of, the springs wouldn't be here until tommorow at best, and the door is heavy. My car is on the street, I could just leave the Jeep there, but my wife is in the garage and goes in and out a few times a day. I would DIY this, especially after watching it done, it's easy and much less risk than a winch or high lift. It's like using two mini-high lift handles with much less tension and it's predictable.

Especially not without knowing exactly what to do and how to do it. A large amount of stored energy, mechanical or electrical, requires great respect and caution.
