I did a spontaneous run up to Miller Rock again yesterday afternoon. I explored the spur I didn't make to the end previously (Forest Road 523). It's a blast, with a few easy challenges along the way but mostly pretty easy. As it nears the end, it gets tight and steeply descends towards the creek. I turned around at an incredibly steep section, where it appears most vehicles have also decided to turn around because it gets really steep right before the creek. I was a little nervous because of the steepness and looseness of the trail but luckily had no issues turning around (carefully) and climbing back up. I'd guess this spur at 5-6 miles long, and it has a few other spurs that I still haven't explored. Spur 523.1 that dead ends near Riverside, appears to be 2-3 miles long but I haven't explored it yet.
After getting back from the FS 523 spur exploration, I ran up the steep alley to Miller Rock for some fun rock crawling..... turned around at Miller Rock and came back down to the intersection and headed down where I came in (at the town of Raymond). I can't wait to come back and finish exploring the spurs I haven't visited yet.... and I've skipped the main obstacles that last couple times since I drove alone and don't want to risk anything on these major obstacles.
Would love to come back one of these weekends with some of you other folks, and spend the day exploring the entire Miller Rock area! It's the best trail in the front range in my opinion..... challenging, quiet, beautiful ... and close to home
