David and his wife (JandDGreens), my friend Dave and I took the trek that led us from Montrose Colorado to Moab Utah called the RimRocker trail. We left Friday the 1st and headed to Montrose. After grabbing some lunch we managed to find the start to the trail. At the start is is somewhat deserty and devoid of much but soon after we climbed in to a lush forest with lots of wildlife. After the haul to Montrose and a ways in the trail we decided to pitch camp.
Second day we ventured on again , went through the small town of Nucla and fueled up. At this point the trail started to get somewhat rougher and the terrain was back to scrub brush and cactus (and HOT). Just when we came up a steep part of the trail, the terrain seemed to change instantly from desert to lush forest and before we knew it we where at Buckeye Lake and at the Colorado/Utah border. of course had to stop for pictures. David and his wife decided to split off and head to Moab due to reservations and parks pass. My friend Dave and I found a great camp spot and stayed the night.
Third day, we again continued on. After we left the forest we where met with somewhat tight trail conditions and very rocky trails. The trail dropped in to a vally and then came up past Area BFE (Hardcore Moab trail area) then dropped back down in to the back side of Moab. We knew we where there when we saw side by sides roaming the streets and Jeeps o' plenty everywhere. Being 110 degrees outside I am glad I reserved a couple rooms at the Motel 6. We got to the Motel and then went out to do the gift shop touristy thing.
Fourth day, could not decide which trail(s) to run since my friend was in a stock older dodge dakota and after radiator repair on his truck with most of the day behind us, we attempted Dome rock trail but that was just too much for him and we decided on Onion creek trail. We went to the top and came down the very scenic trail. around 3pm we left Moab. Having originally planning on running the whole rimrocker back we decided that after many skidplate knocks to his Dakota, to run pavement back to Nucla where the trail was easy smooth dirt road. Pitched camp there and listened to the wild life howl!!!
Fifth day, Ran RimRocker out back to Montrose and headed home.
Wonderful trip! Only regret is that I did not have the big 4runner to run some of the harder trails in Moab but then again it has no A/C...
