    Default OHV permit

I just read a post on facebook which stated that licensed jeeps need an OHV permit for the trails near Buena Vista. Is this true?
I cannot find MVUM for St Elmo area to check out the triangle area Tin Cup and Hancock. How would anyone know this if they didn't
    happen upon a thread?

I was just there, went all over in our Xterra with no sticker, no issues. I forgot we needed it...

so after this thread I ordered my sticker... and CPW got right on it, gubberment style! Check out the dates- issued 1/2/18, postmarked 1/11/18, expires 3/31/18. I don't remember the exact date I ordered it, sometime around my last post on this thread in 8/17. I'm glad the money goes to a good cause and not to administrative costs, or I'd feel a little short changed.

That's odd, I ordered mine for my new buggy and received it within 2 weeks.

They always expire 3/31 of any given year (which is the big year number on it). If you purchased your previous one last summer then it is still good through 3/31/2018...check the bottom left for expiration date. If you buy one this march it will still expire on 3/31/2018. If you purchase on April 1st 2018, it will have 2019 on it and expire 3/31/2019.

The one for licensed vehicles is a bit different than those above. It is a single sticker vs the pair.

True - but it still has the fixed expiration date on 3/31 for any given year.

It's just funny to me that it took 4 months to process, and 9 days between issuing and mailing. When I bought it at a motorcycle shop on Colfax they gave me a 60 day paper temporary permit to carry, it's probably still in my Jeep. It's all good, just funny, and the money goes to maintaining the trails we use, so I'm OK with it and will renew again in the spring.

True but it also depends on who processes your application. For my TJ they have always sent me the pair of stickers. Other people in my club just get the single sticker.

The OHV registration sticker is different than the permit. I believe the OHV registration stickers are for unlicensed vehicles. The permit is used with vehicles that are licensed (plated).

The description on Stay the trail seems to say that the permit is an actual OHV permit. So on and off highway registration, seems silly but I guess the funds go to a good cause. The only mention of this seems to be on Stay the Trail, I couldn't find anything on actual USFS or anywhere else. More power to you if you have plates and still buy the OHV, but I've run into USFS on a number of those trails without an OHV permit and they said nothing about it. Pretty hard to enforce when the requirement is only listed on an independent website. Not trying to deter anyone from sending funds to a good cause, but I wouldn't be afraid of being caught on one of those trails in a plated vehicle without an OHV permit.

The USFS is probably not going to stop or bother you about the sticker since they are Federal and the permit program is it's not their program. The permits are sold and managed by the State of Colorado through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

    http://cpw.state.co.us/buyapply/Page...ationsOHV.aspx

    Colorado OHV Permit requirements:
All OHVs and motor vehicles (including motorcycles) that display a valid Colorado or out-of-state license plate must also display a current Colorado OHV use permit sticker when operated on designated OHV trails in Colorado.

The difference is trail vs. road. Not all "trails" we ride are trails, some are roads and vice versa. If you're out 4x4ing on officially designated "roads", you're good to go. If it's officially designated as a recreational “trail", you need the State Permit. Most "roads" are managed by the BLM and USFS, whereas trails are for recreational purposes only.

The distinction is nuanced and even when I got my sticker last year, the local CPW office wasn't sure what I was talking about. Also, last year (dated information) I think I remember the number of recreational trials the permit is required for was limited, i.e. not all trails required the sticker.

Doink, that's the clearest explanation I've seen yet regarding OHV. I find the permit program and trails that require the permit far more confusing than it should be.

The UDFS rangers write tickets to ATVs, motorcycles, and side by sides that do not have OHV permits all the time. They will start enforcing it on full size rigs were applicable.

In addition CPW has staff now that their sole purpose is to ride trails and enforce the permits. I ran into them on Moody Hill last year, 2 guys on dirt bikes, and they noticed I had the permit.

Thanks man, I'm just repeating the way it was explained to me by our land use representative in a local club I'm in. It's hard to keep it straight the first time you hear about it.
