    Default Transient Camping

We are in an excellent position to do something about this: we can take pics and GPS coordinates and report them to law enforcement so they don't have to hunt around for them. I'm going to make it a mission this year after the closing of the cemetery area near Yankee Hill. The Gilpin sheriff came around when we were there and told us straight up that it was people camping and ******** and leaving garbage all over gravesites that closed it down. We've been wheeling there along with ATVs and bikes for years without issue, we all kept it nice until the transients moved in. Its a specific group, the Sheriff outlines it in this article, not homeless people in general but some losers that ruin a spot and move on.

They're screwing it up for us, we need to start reporting them. GPS and pics.

Traveling into the backcountry in four-wheel drive vehicles, hidden deep in the foothills along with scenes from heaven, CBS4 found trashed campsites. "“You can tell the difference between homeless and transient. These are transients — they don’t want to carry their stuff to the next site,”

We got them down here too. Besides the trash they leave behind there have been a number of small fires from unattended campfires. This is a great idea!

Possibly tied in with the transient camping issue (legalized marijuana causing more folks to travel here to get high)

    Durango issues:

I contacted Boulder Sheriff to see how to report violations. My issue is that I do not keep the sheriff's office numbers for all of the different counties that I drive in. They said that it was fine to report a violation in an area outside of their jurisdiction, and they would contact the right department. She said to take pictures of the site and people involved if possible. The responding officer will contact you and you can text the pictures to them at the number that they give you.

Any offences with camp fires or illegal burning should go straight to 911.

I wonder if (once you have service) you'd be able to contact the county (you're offroad in) PIO via twitter or Facebook? That way they'd get the photos/GPS data right away. I haven't tried that myself, but if I see anything like this when I'm out and about, I'll certainly contact them.

Not sure that they would want any evidence posted publicly, and I don't use facebook or twitter so I really do not know how that would work. My plan is just to take a picture of my GPS coordinates when I take a picture if the site, then when I call see if there is a way that I can text the pics to the officer. I never have enough data to send pictures or get on the internet when off road, but as soon as I get on a major road I can call and usually text pictures.

That is good to know. The forest watch is the Boulder sheriff's office non emergency number. Maybe we should compile a list of numbers and make a sticky or something. Usually when I go to report something the questions they ask are where and when, and if it is over 24 hours ago there is not much they can do about it. Even if you send a picture, unless it has license plate numbers, there is nothing that they can do with it if they do not catch the people in the area because they can claim to be "passing through" or "that was there before we got there".

Being able to call it in right away and get LE out there in time to catch the offenders it the important part. Finding the number easily and quickly can make all the difference.

The FR4x4 way - if you want something done, then get it done.

Start a thread, have people list info, keep updating post #1 in the thread with current info (from what folks contribute in the posts). Admin can sticky it.

I cleaned up a campsite yesterday at Parachute Hill, some losers left a bunch of beer cans, water bottles, various other **** they tried to burn (including a pair of shoes). The camp spot is the best one, with a panaramic view of Mount Meeker..... so sad that people do this. I feel like I'm "patrolling" the area as well, and feel like I have to since a forest fire started here would certainly threaten my home.

the problem is that camping is legal and free so how do I know when to report a group? I'm assuming most groups will be respectful of the land and "leave no trace" but as mentioned, most of these campers are from out of state (saw an Alabama plate on the truck that was camped there yesterday. Should I actually talk to all campers I see and let them know Im keeping an eye out and remind them to leave no trace & respect the land? I've thought about it but also wouldn't want to be shot by some weirdo (and many of these transients are pretty "weird".

I think Im going to call the Forest Service and ask them if they would like me to be a volunteer for this area and at least keep an eye on it and report any concerns....

    thoughts?

A good rule of thumb is seeing how their site looks. There is a big difference between camping out for a couple weeks and living there. If you see a trash heap and debris scattered about with people still there, odds are they are transient. Think hoarders except in the forest.
my campsite is always well kept and left cleaner than I find it.
