This is the way to go for off-road comms. Had my license for a couple years.
I need to get this going. I now have my Beofeng cheepo radio to learn with. I need to get my tech license so I can do more than just listen.
You can take practice tests online too - I think this is the one I used - https://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/study.jsp
Once you successfully pass the online test the real test is a breeze.

how much time is involved start to successful end for folks who have gone through the process?
Read: I'm debating if it's worth dedicating the time for the license.
Go for it Jim, I'm a slacker and just did the practise tests now & them. I've had my tech for years but have yet to use it since so few people use it, CB predominates our group.

If anything, it's a fun hobby, and a cool certificate to show off to your friends!
You're a smart guy Jim, you'll have no problem studying. I just did some online materials and practice questions in bed for a week before the test. Passed no problem.

I have a radio but I've never gotten a license. I'm not saying I wouldn't but so far I havent. Unless you're getting into it as a hobby and plan to spend time on it you don't need a license to operate one in an emergency. You have to do a LOT of broadcasting to get the FCCs attention, and you can listen without one... to a bunch of preppers giving rainfall reports. The arguement against that has been that you won't know how to use it in an emergency if you haven't gotten a license and practiced, but realistically it functions like a walkie-talkie or CB and if you're screaming about wildfire or the rock that fell on your leg over the radio I doubt anyone is going to correct your form, and you won't be breaking any laws.

So I took the class and exam today. Aced the technicians exam. Zero wrong.
Should have my call sign on Monday.
I had been studying for less than an hour a day by taking practice exams via free apps on my Ipad. Would have passed just fine after two weeks of studying on my own but didn't want to pay a $15 exam fee, being the cheap steak that I am. So I waited for this free session. The class was worthwhile in that the instructors provided additional ham info that I didn't know. That said the additional info didn't help with the exam.
I think anyone with interest and using any of the free ham technicians apps could easily pass after a couple of weeks teaching your self. The fcc has an apprx 400 question exam pool that is public. The apps use the real questions. The actual exam is 35 question from the pool and you can miss 9 and still pass.

Congrats from K0TJL (general). Jim, there also is a neat video on the local CRA repeater located up on Squaw mtn. It's almost a 4wd road in its own. Cant find the video now but it shows all the internal workings. Oh, and if that is up your ally, look up Serval Mesh Network
