Default New to 4x4s - XJ in Denver

Hello all. Got me a bone stock 1999 XJ a few days ago for relatively cheap. It used to be a Michigan car so it's got rust in all the expected places, but has 140k on the clock and a very very clean interior and straight body/paint.

It wont be a daily driver and it wont be a crawler, just something modest to get me out exploring with the wife and dog. Not new to vehicles as I own an old mustang, turbo 4 banger, 3 motorcycles, but this is my first 4x4!

I have a 4k upgrade budget so I'll see what's left over after fixing/replacing things here and there then start looking at lifts/wheels/tires/stereo to start. Looking forward to the journey!

    First, welcome aboard!

There is a lot of Colorado you can see with minor changes to that XJ!

There is a wealth of (searchable) information at NAXJA, and they have a local chapter for face to face interaction.

Well, today I walked into 4 Wheel Parts and couldn't help but throw more money at them than I paid for the car, hah. RE 3.5" lift with 31" BFG ATs on steelies plus some other steering upgrades. So it begins!

What steering upgrades did you get? I would invest in rock sliders next, important to protect that part of the Jeep. If you are not investing in a new front bumper soon, you will want some front recovery. I have a set of recovery hooks you can have. There is a picture here.

Nothing crazy in regards to upgrades, just stuff it needed like a new track bar, steering stab, and some tie rod ends. I first need to see what kind of trouble I want to get into this summer, then consider the armor and recovery. Right now the wife isn't convinced we need to be worried about scraping over rocks or getting winched out of places yet, yet.

So, um, you'll just need to select the correct trail, with her riding along... That'll change right quick!

You may not be planning to need to be winched out but you will still want some sort of recovery on your truck. Things happen, trucks break down, etc. I would highly recommend setting yourself up to have the recovery points on your truck at a minimum, and you can't beat the price.(free for the front) If you have a hitch on the rear they make a D-ring that insert into it when needed, they disappear around town so don't leave it in all the time.
